Professional environment, realistic expectations, challenging tasks.

    Market Development Specialist (Former Employee)

ProsInnovative products, top of the line sales force, Johnson & Johnson career progression

ConsShifting management and sales force culture due in part to Johnson & Johnson transition

Advice to Senior ManagementLead from inside out approach, get rid of bottom 10% of sales force, they'll more than likely be bottom 10% no matter where they go and their morale can pull down your entire region

Great start-up feel under a big company umbrella!

    Senior Administrative Assistant (Former Employee)
    Menlo Park, CA

ProsPeople are fantastic! Everyone hard working and team oriented.
Location easy to access from East Bay (right off the Dumbarton)
Flexibility of schedule, telecommuting ok on occasion

ConsA bit slow to accept new processes - even though they're more efficient
Too many layers to get approvals from!
Management far too loyal to one another - kept bad directors on, let good employees go...

Advice to Senior ManagementBe open to change.

You need to work very hard here. Always busy

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Menlo Park, CA

ProsThere are many smart people working in this company. You can learn and grow a lot working here.

ConsNot enough resources. It takes too much to time to hire new people and therefore everyone is wearing many hats.

Exciting at first but quickly turned monotonous. Awesome people.

    Contractor (Current Employee)
    Menlo Park, CA

ProsJ&J benefits for regular employees, fun events/parties, innovative products for a growing niche market in medical devices, good quartely reviews.

ConsThere seemed to be a bit of a culture clash that occured post acquisition.
Several employees seemed unhappy with direction of company

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize and do more to motivate your team. Get rid of the incompetant managers as they are only keeping people below them from moving up.

ConsThere are office politics just like any other company.
HR dept is a weak link.

    Rewards vs. Job Satisfaction

    (Current Employee)
    Menlo Park, CA

Pros- You're paid for the work you put in, the more you put in the higher the rewards ... unfortunately at end of year

ConsInnovation is appreciated when you show the numbers at the end of the quarter, but if you're trying to make something happen at the corporate level you're screwing yourself out of the job. This is a follow the system environment.
    - beware of the "step up" sales position
    - 99% of the company will talk about "the number" 99% of the time
    - If you're driven by money as a satisfaction factor you will do VERY WELL.
    - US Surgical Club.

Advice to Senior ManagementFor an innovative company and innovative products, this company fails in the fact that it just transfers all the U.S. Surgical people over to it. Same process, different company ... cycle repeats.

    Avoid like the pneumonic plague!

    Territory Manager (Current Employee)
    London, England (UK)

    ProsHuge Bonuses
I need to enter 5 words in this section, apologies, I find that very, very difficult

    ConsBonuses are unachievable
Unrealistic expectations on targets and timescales
On the verge of imploding, therefore long term career opportunities are 0
    Poor strategic management
Managed directly by the US, who do not understand oversees markets
J&J Credo doesn't apply to Acclarent, it is all about the money and nothing else
You are a number....and a very expendable one
Very high staff turnover, most of the sales force have left (or forced to leave) in past year, for the above reasons
Very 'cut throat', bordering on illegal in some cases.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider understanding your markets, understanding your customers and stop focusing on the fact you want to be a $1bn ENT company. Europe is completely different to the US and the challenges faced and we do not face the same challenges as the states, despite what you keep trying to drill in to us. Try looking after your staff rather than beating them with a stick over targets (quota) and unrealistic timescales.

    Great Start-up Company

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsInnovative products creating new treatments for patients.
Work-hard/play-hard culture is great if you like to be productive and get stuff done
Used to have beer fridays- at least before the J&J acquisition.

    ConsSkimpy on the options
Pay targeted at 25% for no apparent reason
No 401k matching - at least this was the case prior to the J&J acquisition.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe biggest complaints were the stinginess with the options. The CEO and Founder, however, both cleaned house with the J&J acquision. They could have made the option structure more equitable for the employees. On top of this, they targeted pay at the 25th percentile. Cheapo.
