Pros
There WERE some great people at AccuWeather, sadly most have left by now. Trouble is, they were beaten down so badly by the owners and top brass, that they became battle weary.
Cons
The owners need to retire and pass the reigns to the next generation. The industry has dramatically changed, and AccuWeather is stuck in a rut of "how it used to be".
Advice to Senior Management
See above. Look to the great people who have left you and try and get them back. Improve the pay and the benefits, and then step away and let the company grow. Go public, get an influx of capital and SOAR
Pros
World's best weather organization. No place better to learn about weather
Cons
State College is in a time warp. No place for advancement. They think they are in the know but really are so far behind the times.
Advice to Senior Management
Give praise when praise is due. Look outside the company to see the advancement that is going on in the realy world
Pros
Interesting work that helps people, opportunities for learning and professional growth, opportunities for advancement, flexible environment in most areas, most coworkers are dedicated and very good people, generally excellent and improving management, short commute and non-urban environment if you work in the State College office (this is a plus for some people, a minus for others)
Cons
Non-urban environment if you work in the State College office (this is a plus for some people, a minus for others)
Pros
AccuWeather has a lot of different departments where there is a lot to learn from. The experience and knowledge that one can take advantage of can be extremely helpful and financially rewarding at another company later in your career, but AccuWeather is run with the idea that everyone is replaceable and so opportunities for professional and salary growth are extremely rare and limited.
Cons
salary, benefits and management are not great. everyone is watching their ass and unfortunately this leads to a lack of creativity. It is very hard to understand the structure of the company and how it operates, who reports to who, and how things get approved. There are a lot of middle managers and a lot of times you wonder what these people do and how they got there.
Advice to Senior Management
encourage creativity, show your appreciation to employees more.
Pros
A heritage brand with over 47 years in the business. Positive cash flow (allbeit at the expense of competative advantage or real growth)
Cons
They are locked in a time warp since 1963, operating out of State Collage PA and really believe that they are the biggest and best . Unfortunately, time has passed them by and now suffer from Incompotent management, dysfunctional executive team (after all, who would choose to live in State College?) Add to that... minimal benefit packages (health plan blows!) and sub standard salary and commission strucure. All resulting in high turnover and substandard media platforms. No wonder the advertising industry considers them an afterthought.
Advice to Senior Management
If you really want to preserve the heritage brand that you created, consider selling AccuWeather to a real company with professional management, resouces to invest and forward thinking executives.
