Pros
I earn a pay check.
Cons
no compensation, no job advancement, no appreciation from management
Advice to Senior Management
Put more into the business and give people a fair chance to prove themselves.
Pros
Great part time job for student
Cons
Dover is a small town. Like to work someplace with more opportuniites.
Pros
Neighborhood store with good customers, Good employees. Liked the work and work family. At one time it was an exceptionally beautiful store. Ace Brand is excellent.
Cons
Now looks bad. Hardware in back?? Concept ruined. Prior management had better concept.
Advice to Senior Management
Should have stuck with the guy you had. Store looked so much better. Better layout. More class.
How did this turn into a furniture store? Poor choices drove away the business.
Pros
To get experience in a wide variety of minimum wage fields, to have a secure and relatively friendly environment, and to ensure flexible hours for a student or retiree. Good social interaction with the community. It is a very friendly, customer oriented store. From personal experience-I have always gotten the days off that I needed, and combined onerous schoolwork with a simple means of income.
Cons
The work is demanding, unrewarding, and underpaid. Students are abused into terrible conditions and harder work than older employees in the same position, as well as disrespected. From personal experience-I'm going to UIUC electrical engineering in the fall, and management thinks that I need to be told how to count products, and doesn't trust that I can remember how to clean the store- a list was provided daily for two years. I once cleaned out a drainage ditch or garbage for half an hour (we are next to a fast food store) and the manager came out because he didn't believe I had done the work, looked at my handiwork, and told me to pick a single leaf up; simply to avoid admitting he was wrong and I had done my job.
Advice to Senior Management
Reward good workers. Cut out laziness. Family employees are not the only employees in need of promotion. Treat everyone as your equal, and your customers will detect the satisfaction.
Pros
It was a small Mom & Pop store with a laid back atmosphere. Management gave employees some autonomy. The customers were the best part of the job.
Cons
There was no praise for doing a good job, and management also didn't like to answer questions. A family ran the store so no chance to move up in the organization. Politics and favoritism played a part as well.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more patient with employees. Praise us for doing a good job more often instead of waiting for us to make a mistake just so you can chew us out.
Pros
The owners were nice. Liked helping customers
Cons
No training
Poor management
No work family balance
Long shifts
Advice to Senior Management
Look at your management not your employees as to your bottom line.
Pros
working with great people and customers, very flexible schedule, very low stress. Also, as you make freinds with local contractors, you gain a lot of knowledge about the local businesses, building codes, and learn a lot to help other customers as well as for yourself. Ace tends to favor hire older workers due to life expereince, better work ethic, and the more mature personality for dealing with their customers
Cons
has with any retail sales, low pay when compared to mfg
Advice to Senior Management
keep up the great job !
Pros
For retail its better than other retail stores. Hardware or non hardware. It is a decent place to work if your in school but count your blessings on being in management unless someone croaks!
Cons
No employee discount or rewards! No room for advancement or pay increase. Insufficient amount of staff out-ways the pay rate! Full benefits that don't change!
Advice to Senior Management
Implement better team efforts than I! Spread the wealth and responsibilities so everybody can achieve their goals! Mandatory breaks and longer lunches!
Pros
Strong name recognition, quite competent store level employees, carries hard to find items overlooked by the big boxes, with good ownership - integrates itself into a community, great customers mostly as well as great co-workers. (Depends upon the store)
Cons
Long hours, no real chance to advance beyond a store manager unless you buy yourself a store. Some inconsistencies which comes from independent ownerships. Some of the products selected by corporate aren't necessarily chosen for the 'right' reasons. A level of disconnect from Oak Brook mind think and the store mind think.
Advice to Senior Management
This is directed to those who reside in Oak Brook. You have a world class name and organization but it needs to be kept flexible while remaining true to the core of what made ACE. There is a great resource of people in the stores who you need to start tapping from and getting them in corporate. If you do nothing else do this if you want to keep the company strong in the future. Otherwise the company will falter and perhaps fail. Once you set your minds more in level with the stores minds you will see dividends as never before!
Pros
the customers are the best!!
Cons
too much to do and not enough people to do it
Advice to Senior Management
They are doing what they think is right. I just wish they could see that we are unhappy and that leads to a lot of turnover and more stress on your longtime employees.
