get to work with people and not alone at a desk.

Customer Service Representative (Current Employee)
Carlinville, IL

I have been working at Ace Hardware full-time for more than 5 years

Prosyou get to learn about tools and other areas and get to help people find what they need to get a project done, and they love that we know what they need to do that.

Consjob titles don't mean anything there and there is no such thing as seniority.

Advice to Senior Managementtake the time to listen to all involved in any matter whatever it may be u might find out that new employee has the best idea or help you might have been looking for.

Absolutely the best qualified & personable people in the hardware/home improvement business.

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Gilbert, AZ

I have been working at Ace Hardware part-time for less than a year

ProsImmediate help from people qualified to not only help you with the proper parts but, be able to explain how to do the job. Will not sell you unnecessary items.

ConsLow pay. I believe that leads to perhaps, frequent employee turnover. The work environment makes up for a lot, however, money is an issue in most families especially at the lower end of the income scale.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease salary to prevent the "revolving door" in employee turnover.

Mostly positive

Advertising Manager (Former Employee)
Oak Brook, IL

I worked at Ace Hardware full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood values and very positive with respect to work life balance.

ConsNo major cons, but not a lot of room for growth. Small company feel with decent salaries that could be better for management positions.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake the company public so you can grow and invest in the business for consistency and better POS management.

Great company with 'family' feel

Cashier (Former Employee)
Portland, OR

I worked at Ace Hardware part-time for more than a year

ProsEach store is individually owned and you get the benefits of being a part of a bigger organization.
Positive work environment and great long term staff.

ConsNot much upward mobility working in any retail environment.
Some customers were too 'old school' to listen to advice from a woman.

Great hands on learning experience.

Floor Representative (Former Employee)
Newport Beach, CA

I worked at Ace Hardware part-time for less than a year

ProsGained lots of hands on experience and worked closely with management. Gained a lot of experience working with customers to solve problems. Left knowing how to do much more then I entered with.

ConsLong hours, sometimes slow. I found that the middle of the week saw a very slow flow of customers and the jobs sometimes became tedious.

Cashier

Cashier (Former Employee)
Rockford, MI

I worked at Ace Hardware part-time for more than a year

ProsFriendly people to work with, Decent pay, Flexible hours. It is a fun job for a little extra cash. Everyone is very helpful and good to work with. If you expect to have fun, then you will.

ConsHours can be grueling on your feet. The owner can be quite OCD and changes his mind very often. Be prepared to take everything with a grain of salt, this is a retail store afterall, and the customer is always right.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemember that all of your employees are trying to make a difference in your store. Treat them with the respect they deserve, not just the customers.
