Pros
You meet great people and you work for great people. You have flexibility and are encouraged to excell in any aspect of the company that interests you. The environment is friendly and conducive to cultivating friendships. The job is full of projects that leave you with a sense of accomplishment.
Cons
You must work weekends and holidays.
Pros
Steady employment as long as I?m willing to be at their disposal. The customers remember me and seek me out for assistance. I?m known as "Tony the Ace Man".
Cons
Mainly, how can I top off their pay scale at $10.25/hr after 20 yrs of loyalty?
Not much positive feedback from management. Little consideration for personal life except in real disasters--don?t get days off when ask ahead for an appt, even; but if family is in serious situation, they make sure you get what you need. Schedule changes are made w/o employees being asked, and WE are to check the schedule to see if it has been changed--which sometimes happens several times in a week, and even while we are on a day off and can?t know not to go in the next day.
Advice to Senior Management
Respect your employees and their need to be treated as people who have a life outside of Ace. Pay commensurate to skills and value to the company.
Pros
I learned a whole lot about home maintenance, construction, electrical and plumbing while there. I also learned a bit about sales.
Cons
Very little opportunity for advancement in a retail location. They were very insistent about working your share of Saturdays, in some cases employees had to pay one another to be able to take off a Saturday (so the person working that day made their wages, plus whatever you agreed to pay out of your pocket).
Advice to Senior Management
Consider paying a premium to those that are willing/able to work Saturdays. Its a busy day when lots of money is made, so you could afford to entice more employees to volunteer for those days.
Pros
Most of the people are pleasant to work with, the discounts you get on the items are amazing and you are treated with respect and kindness.
Cons
It can get frustrating working with rude customers and when some associates decide to do things their way rather than listening to management.
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure the managers and assistant managers do not abuse their power through their role because it can end up hurting the company as well as losing some of the staff.
Pros
Management, flexible hours, competitive pay, employee discount. Great place to get into retail and learn alot about home repair. Great company!
Cons
you are on your feet all day. You have to deal with cranky customers but must maintain your composure because they come to Ace for the customer service.
Advice to Senior Management
Give employees more freedom on return policies and don't sweat the little things (customer returns, customers taking advantage of sales limit purchases).
Pros
- learn MANY new things (electrical/key-cutting/paint)
- no previous requirements
- social interactment
- ear pieces help make communication easier if you dont know an answer
- not a boring job since you will be doing something different every hour
Cons
- people come up to you with rediculously hard questions at time
- many questions are answered on the spot by making something up or simply reading the product's label
- must be able to retain a lot of information
Advice to Senior Management
By what I've experienced, the management at Ace Hardware acts professionally and definitely takes interest in watching employees grow from the experience.
Pros

Cons
no down time, are very busy all the time
Advice to Senior Management
keep pricing sharp on competitive items. improve advertising to have more relvance and more pop. Focus on core strengths like paint and plumbing
Pros
A great opportunity to learn for fellow employees and customers are hardware and solutions
Great family of employees
Good, stable and familiar customer base
Cons
Difficult to any days off even when requested due to the small employment staff
Pay is not great
Tasks can start to seem trivial or redundant
Advice to Senior Management
Your employees deserve to be paid according to what they bring to the store as a whole, low pay grades bring down the store moral and thus negatively effect your bottom line.
Pros
Great people, good hours, unlimited opportunity to network.
Cons
Customer service is the number one priority, many interruptions throughout the day.
Advice to Senior Management
Invest in technology training
Pros
Fun atmosphere most of the time.
Got to work in all different departments despite being a cashier.
Flexible scheduling.
Only having to work every other weekend.
Casual dress code. Could wear jeans.
Annual reviews.
Profit sharing.
Cons
Pay not so great.
Lots of drama between the management and sometimes between co-workers. That's to be expected anywhere though.
Flower season. Enough said.
Advice to Senior Management
Hire people who actually want to be there. And in busy seasons, hire more temps. Give better pay.
