    Pros

Ace Hardware is an optimistic corporation. Always promoting positivity towards their customers, stores, and employees.
They have been very good at promoting and seem to be on a path to growth.

    Cons

Every store is different because Ace is a retailer-owned cooperative. This is only a downside because it's difficult to know what you may be getting into. The store I work for is great but I have heard good and bad stories about other stores.

    Pros

Ace IS the place to work. Great local leadership in their distribution centers.

    Cons

The corporate bureaucracy is a bit much to handle. Self preservationists seem to rule. This company could really take off if they would just trust the people they have on board.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To Corporate leadership, I would say trust the brain power you have hired and trust less the traveling salesman that convinces you that their system or product or software will solve all of your problems. Take a look at the mind set of people you have entrusted to lead from Chicago.

I worked at Ace Hardware as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Was assigned a manager and given three distinct vendors from each of the 4 Replenishment planners who worked under the manager. Duties included both daily, planner position-based skills, as well as more long term projects that involved cross-functional collaboration with interns from different departments. The manager and planners were all very willing to help and clearly cared about ACE. The company had multiple events throughout the summer for interns and provided ample opportunity to network.

    Cons

Pay was average compared to other firms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider a fixed rate salary for interns to allow for more flexible hours and maybe draw more talent.

I worked at Ace Hardware full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I like hardware stores so this was an interesting job. College town location which meant a wide variety of customers. One construction contractor was trained in opera and would come in and sing for us. People were allowed to bring in their dogs and we had a neighborhood German Shepard who would come in all on his own, head for the register and sit there waiting for his treat. My co-workers were mostly way over-educated for the job which was a plus.

    Cons

Store was over-stocked and understaffed. Manager was an obsessive workaholic and drove us past what we were physically able to do. I broke a bone in my foot (stress fracture) and he never noticed that I was in serious pain and limping badly. He made me feel that if I slowed down or complained I would lose my job. The assistant manager was a disorganized micromanager. A couple of co-workers were out of control. One of them thought teasing people was funny; another was a total head case.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

What promotions? More work, more responsibility should have come with more pay.
Company values--family values are fine, but there is a definite downside to nepotism. The owner's son was supposed to be managing the business but we never saw him. He never came in to help us
time-off policies---when my Dad was sick and dying I couldn't get time off to visit him (it was a nine hour drive) primarily because the head case co-worker was snatching up a lot of vacation time during our busiest seasons. I got yelled at for asking
