  1. Actavis Global Brands R&D

    I worked at Actavis

    Pros

Supervisor, colleagues, and subordinates within Actavis Global Brands R&D in Salt Lake City were a highly effective, efficient, cohesive drug development organization with a long history of working together, high level of accomplishment in terms of successful drug development programs (approved NDAs and ANDAs) for a relatively small group.

    Cons

M&A activities at the corporate level were not followed through with very effective integration programs (at least in brand R&D); external consultants who lacked insight into the company were hired to drive the integration, resulting in a political free-for-all that disregarded accomplishments and competencies, and rewarded the loudest, most strident voices rather than the most effective organizations.

    Advice to Management

During the integration exercise following your next acquisition, consider the effectiveness of particular organizations to be integrated, e.g. global brands R&D and its departments, in terms of number of products under development compared to headcount, number of NDA filings compared to headcount, and number of NDA approvals compared to headcount. A larger, top-heavy organization is not necessarily better than a lean one.

    Pros

Stable, growth opportunities, great corporate goals and the compensation packages are good if you stay. The people are great and very helpful.

    Cons

The corporate culture has changed since getting acquired. Science is no longer a focus. People are no longer valued. It's all about the bottom line.

    Pros

Great management. Many opportunities to participate in new projects and learn.

    Cons

Company has made multiple changes without much vision. Major projects in the Americas to change the name, and now change it again...

    Pros

Big business, pretty good benefits, seems to be growing continually - mainly through M&A...

    Cons

Forest Laboratories was a stable company that cared about its people, though salaries were so so for newer employees and opportunites for advancement were limited. That all changed with the advent of Brent Saunders, when everything became about mergers & acquisitions, "efficiency" and the glorification of senior management. Since the merger with Actavis, and now with Allergan, the company has shown itself to be brilliant at getting Brent in the news and impressing Wall Street, but borderline incompetent in its relationship with its employees. The downsizing/outsourcing of the New York locations has been handled in a spectacularly callous and sloppy manner.

    Advice to Management

Find some time to prioritize actual work over splashy wheeling and dealing.

    Pros

used to be very entrepreneurial but after late managements imposition of rules, became almost impossible to do anything before the marketing director's approval

    Cons

really badly managed Turkish company pretending to be an American corporation. Avoid it unless it's your last choice of employment

I have been working at Actavis full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good middle level management and line employees generally know what they are supposed to do. Company has good history, prior to transformative M&A activity

    Cons

Not clear that current management is in for long-haul and values historic employees. Communication could be improved to what it was with the legacy companies.
