I have been working at Acted full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Very dynamic team. You will be working with young (but qualified) people in sometimes difficult situation. You will learn a lot on how the NGO sector works, and you will rapidly be given responsabilities. After six month of hard work you will be promoted.
Very strong organization culture. You really feel like being part of a family!
The organization is known to get things done. Not always in the best conditions, but still, ACTED always comes up with crazy ideas to deliver the projects.

    Cons

The organization has witnessed a tremendous growth these past few years. Therefore the structure is sometimes lacking. Everybody is overwhelmed with work. If you are looking for a peaceful job, this is definetly not the place to look for.
Salaries are low compared to the other NGOs (for expats).
A lot of administrative procedures that are sometimes frustrating.
"You either swim or sink" meaning that you will sometimes be thrown on a mission where you will be completely submerged with work and responsible for staff. No room for errors, you need to get things done (eventhough the difficult situation you are in) or you are out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

ACTED has the potential to be the biggest french NGO in terms of projects and financing. However, there is a lack of recognition in the humanitarian sector. I would advice management to increase their public visibility.
    Ameliorate the professional structure.
Avoid having a too high staff turnover. Invest in your employees.

Not a great experience over all. The initial one year I got to learn a lot but it was my manager only who facilitated it

    Pros

The environment is very homely. You can dress however you like, good heating and AC facilities. OK food too. Some sports opportunities

    Cons

crazy workload, horrible work life balance, open and unfair discrimination against national staff, very incompetent people heading departments, assistants and officers working like slaves for the higher management and HoDs, bad compensations, virtually no benefits, very little career growth, no professional trainings, no vision and little strategy for the future, very little say of the employee. CD/DCD/Regional Director are the Gods

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a long term plan of action for your organisation first, instead of rushing to develop multi-million proposal workplans a day before the deadline.

Maybe a good place to get into the sector, but get out as soon as you can

I have been working at Acted full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - (semi)-paid internship program.
    - Can act as entry point into sector.
    - Easy promotion

    Cons

    - Very low pay grades.
    - Absolutely terrible management with no training.
    - Extremely high turnover.
    - Quantity over quality. The organization takes on projects it isn't qualified for and hurts beneficiaries.
    - Very little of country leadership is over 28. Very young, inexperienced, and not mature enough for roles.
    - There is no HR.
    - Security is terrifyingly bad.
    - Run like a family business. Everyone has to follow founder's instructions or they're fired (its wild!).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Get management training for everyone above officer level.
    - Completely redo orientation, especially security orientation.
    - Founders need to step down. Huge case of founder's syndrome.

Great entry opportunity to the sector

    I worked at Acted

    Pros

ACTED gives excellent opportunities to new comers to the sector, it allows self-growth and gives substantial responsibilities despite lack of previous experiences. It is a very fast pacing environment that promotes proactive people.

    Cons

Because many young and with not extensive experience are given an opportunity, sometimes it lacks guidance. Often learning is done by doing and you find yourself re-inventing the wheel. This can affect also the quality of the response.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Giving youth opportunities to grow is excellent, however it should be coupled with strong managerial guidance.

I worked at Acted as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    - vaccination and other pre-departure costs paid on-time
    - a few hundred EUR surcharge in lower security context

    Cons

    - quantity but quality oriented; proposals written from fancy cafes by junior staff hesitating to travel to a 'dirty' and remote field
    - HR changes without a rationale and appropriate explanation,
    - budget leftover spent on expensive phones and 4 WDs which differ from those used by other NGOs in the industry (=too appalling in some lower security contexts)
    - totally servile staff can be rapidly promoted without the necessary maturity required for a post
    - meetings for 8.30 AM, 9 AM announced at 2 AM (you were expected to read your emails all night long as you are paid for your slavery work)
    - 5 days off in 2 months work (no emergency context, an early recovery period only)
    - no one cares if you as a manager share a room with other 2-3 people whereabout Paris management staff sleep in outside hotels

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - behave like human beings, in this type of industry it is an absolute prerequisite
    - let other qualified people to express their voice
    - don't punish but appreciate and learn from critique
    - don't relocate people to other areas if you are not happy with their performance - a direct dismissal is more transparent

I worked at Acted full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Gives young people an opportunity to hold management positions and have job responsibilities that probably would be unlikely in any other organization
Good perks, housing has been nice
Some projects have been helpful to the community

    Cons

HR department barely exists in HQ - basically a recruiting machine. No attention given to real HR issues such as performance management, capacity building, work/life balance.
High turnover makes it difficult to be productive and efficient.
Management in HQ make snap judgements on employees. If the judgment is negative, often times the person is pushed out in a very unprofessional manner. Management comes off as being heartless.
Too much focus on what donors want and not what beneficiaries want.
Work/life balance is non-existent. Extremely late work hours, high stress environment when it is unnecessary.

    Pros

De nombreuses opportunités sont données à des travailleurs inexpérimentés mais motivés.

Grande autonomie dans les missions sur le terrain.

Lots of opportunities provided to inexperienced and motivated people.
    Great autonomy in field missions.

    Cons

Le département des ressources humaines n'a aucun pouvoir dans les décisions du groupe, ce qui en fait uniquement un service de recrutement

Les cadres supérieurs appliquent des décisions arbitraires de gestion des ressources humaines

    Manque de liquidité constant

Absence of power of the HR department in HQ, which turns out to be only a recruitment department.
Arbitrary HR decisions by senior management.
Very much donor oriented rather then beneficiary oriented
    Constant cash shortages

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Le succès de ACTED repose presque exclusivement sur l'implication hors du commun de ses employés à tous les échelons de la hiérarchie. Il est temps de mettre en place une structure basée sur l'expérience qui soit capable de réagir aux urgences avec méthod

The successes of ACTED almost uniquely rely on the outstanding implication of its staff at all levels of management. It is time to put in place structure to be able to respond methodologically to emergencies that is based on experience.

ACTED is very much perceived to be an ego driven organization.

Salaries are 10 to 20 % below NGO sector salaries
