I worked at Actian full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I was well treated by my immediate supervisors and co-workers. Actian was very flexible about telecommuting. The pay and benefits are in line with Silicon Valley standards.

    Cons

Actian grows by acquisition only. In the time that I worked there, only a tiny few truly advanced their careers, or had any control over their careers.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees. Have the courage to envision something new and different, and follow through on it.

I have been working at Actian full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great products and creative ideas and processes.

    Cons

Does not take the things that are most important to vendors seriously. Missing large opportunities because they can not see the "Forest Through The Trees".

    Advice to Management

Climb on board to what is most important to keeping good employees and customers.

    I worked at Actian full-time

    Pros

Intelligent staff at all levels, fun coworkers (never too busy or serious to share a laugh or word of encouragement) loyal partners/customers, friendly atmosphere. With dedication and achievement there was plenty of opportunity for advancement. They developed their sales teams. I got to see the "every hand on deck" approach across several customers and partners of all sizes, and across all industries. The interaction between support, marketing, engineering, and sales within the integration division was very collaborative, and constructive. It showed in the positive feedback from customers. Competitive incentives for sales. All of management from SVP down understood that even though we were in sales (and targets obviously needed to be hit) we were all people, with families and priorities. This was refreshing. They did not shame or guilt anyone or ask anyone to perform unnatural acts at the end of the quarter to hit quota. In a single word, they had integrity. I felt I left a family and that was the toughest part of the decision to move on.

    Cons

C-level communication not as frequent, clear, or as consistent as I would have preferred. I sometimes felt the whole company lacked a single voice and identity, and that the absence of an overarching mission and set of core values could sometimes cascade into the various product divisions, leaving those teams to either guess and/or form their own identities. Pros outweighed the cons by far.

    Advice to Management

Fine tune a few things, communicate frequently and consistently (referencing past plans and progress to plan, reasons for changes, etc)

I worked at Actian full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people, products coming together nicely, compensation packages very reasonable. Outside of SF Bay Area, flexible on working locations. Global in nature.

    Cons

Recent RIF and now many others moving onwards. Those left will have a huge load to carry, so execution and focus may become more of an issue. Suspect Board placing incredible financial pressure on management controls of investment/expenses.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the products and markets that have already been identified. Your people like the company and will trust in leadership. Resist further RIFs as in this market your talent will rapidly bleed off.

I have been working at Actian full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Actian has some of the greatest people you will ever meet and work with. Great technologies from 3 different companies. Very smart engineers. Pay is reasonable. Benefits are pretty good.

    Cons

Executive management is clueless. They hire all these prima donnas, make sales goals there are unachievable and then layoff all the people that are actually doing the product work because sales missed their numbers. Layoffs again and talks of outsourcing more and more work leaves me to believe there is little to no job security. Promises of stock options, bonuses and going public just seems to be a pipe dream. It’s a meld of 3 or more cultures that spirits have been crushed. They don’t promote from within. There is no future.

    Advice to Management

Stop worrying about the next Mercedes, BMW or Audi you are going to lease and get back to thinking about being how a startup would be run. You’re not bigwigs at big companies anymore. You’re a nobody at a nothing company so stop acting like prima donnas. You’re someone that’s been given an opportunity to build something great but your egos keep getting in the way of progress. Roll up your sleeves and get to work. Work on acknowledging and rewarding those who do all the hard grunt work who create the products and those in the field dealing with potential clients. Work on building a positive culture in the company and getting employees to be excited about coming to work knowing that the company values and cares about them because you have great people and if you took 2 minutes to meet the people that work in this company you’d see you are part of something that could be awesome.
