I worked at Actian full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good people, products coming together nicely, compensation packages very reasonable. Outside of SF Bay Area, flexible on working locations. Global in nature.

    Cons

Recent RIF and now many others moving onwards. Those left will have a huge load to carry, so execution and focus may become more of an issue. Suspect Board placing incredible financial pressure on management controls of investment/expenses.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the products and markets that have already been identified. Your people like the company and will trust in leadership. Resist further RIFs as in this market your talent will rapidly bleed off.

I have been working at Actian full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Actian has some of the greatest people you will ever meet and work with. Great technologies from 3 different companies. Very smart engineers. Pay is reasonable. Benefits are pretty good.

    Cons

Executive management is clueless. They hire all these prima donnas, make sales goals there are unachievable and then layoff all the people that are actually doing the product work because sales missed their numbers. Layoffs again and talks of outsourcing more and more work leaves me to believe there is little to no job security. Promises of stock options, bonuses and going public just seems to be a pipe dream. It’s a meld of 3 or more cultures that spirits have been crushed. They don’t promote from within. There is no future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop worrying about the next Mercedes, BMW or Audi you are going to lease and get back to thinking about being how a startup would be run. You’re not bigwigs at big companies anymore. You’re a nobody at a nothing company so stop acting like prima donnas. You’re someone that’s been given an opportunity to build something great but your egos keep getting in the way of progress. Roll up your sleeves and get to work. Work on acknowledging and rewarding those who do all the hard grunt work who create the products and those in the field dealing with potential clients. Work on building a positive culture in the company and getting employees to be excited about coming to work knowing that the company values and cares about them because you have great people and if you took 2 minutes to meet the people that work in this company you’d see you are part of something that could be awesome.

    Pros

There are some very talented people here. And some great Managers that have their employees best interest at heart and gives the employees an opportunity to grow with the company.

    Cons

Largest concern is the "C" level just does not get it!! It? Listening to those talented people and managers and invest in those that can grow the company. They have a hard to coming to the reality that to keep good employees you have to pay them properly and stop taking away from benefits to save money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

LIsten to your "Talent" and treat them like a team.

I have been working at Actian full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good individual products from acquisitions, solid Engineering team. Company is profitable due to maintenance and renewals on legacy products. World wide presence in database BI market.

    Cons

Company sells platform, but poor coordination between products due to weak leadership. Company marketing has smart-sounding focus but products don't work together to back it up. Engineering staff not valued. Many top Engineers have left company due to management, and were replaced with bad hires in Engineering that don't help products come together.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need stronger technical leaders, too much top-down planning that doesn't match what the products can do. Need more entrepreneur and aggressive Engineering or products will fall behind. Company can succeed if they pull things together quickly!

I have been working at Actian full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people at the front line make the difference at Actian. Some loyal to the core, they put up with the disdain shown by management and executives and take pride in doing a good job, serving customers whether that be in tech support, sales, presales or admin.

    Cons

Too much to say - it all stems from too many VPs and a CEO who shows contempt for employees and customers.

CEO and executives seem to spend a ton of money on flying around the world to attend a series of ludicrously useless meetings. Workers at the ground level are left with zero budgets to develop products or invest in internal infrastructure while the execs would rather keep British Airways and United Airlines in business. As a result, there is no platform despite the messaging, the whole company is kept going by a loyal customer base who use legacy products like INGRES and PSQL and get screwed over on price when licenses are renewed. I guess some poor company has to pay for the lifestyle of the execs.

Despite repeated efforts to show willing, the management team is unable to treat workers like human beings and tell them what is going on. The answer to most problems seems to get solved by hiring more incompetent people, more directors and VPs with over-inflated egos and job titles who only want to pass comment on what others should do but not do any of the work themselves.

But hey, we get the odd treat: a free breakfast here, a free lunch there and the odd social gathering. Awesome.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire the countless directors and VPs who are useless and don't actually do anything. Listen to the folks who actually do the work. Stop deluding yourself that the platform is anything new or that your sales team can actually sell it. Instead of flying around the world at great expense, come in to the offices and talk to your staff!

There are good people at Actian and good products, sadly the whole firm is let down by spineless managers, a case of too many chiefs and a dictatorial CEO.
