    Pros

As an intern at ACF-HQ, I had the ability to take control of my own projects, contribute new ideas and solutions, and receive advice on my career direction. A great organization to work for.

    Cons

Unpaid with transit and lunch reimbursements.

    Great staff and very dedicated

    Cons

    Management: Working hours, salary.
They treat employees worse than...they have no respect for their staff. this is not a very transparent place.

    Pros

Great international culture, very hard working and dedicated staff. Some people have been working with the organization for many years. It has a very good reputation in Europe and in the Humanitarian field. It gives chances to people that other they will not get in other places.

    Cons

The organization has grown too fast in a very short time and it was not ready for it. It seems a bit lost and unprepared.
There is a very unhealthy working environment, people are drained and not motivated. Need for improvement in management, long working stressful days and very poor recognition of employees. Very high turn over for such small organization. No employee support from HR or Management. It is a non for profit but certain things are managed corporate, very corporate.

    Advice to Management

Be aware of what it is going on in your organization. A good manager is always alert and knows what is going on at all times. Follow your own Principles: be honest and transparent always, care about people- your employees are people too-, be fair equally, create positive and healthy working habits, and recognize your employees. Mostly, hire the right people for the right job. Strategic planning is very important and something missing in certain areas of ACF USA.

    Pros

Very professional and highly organized international development organization. Smaller than the biggest names (UN et al, IRC, Red Cross, Oxfam, MSF, etc.) but very respectable. Little doubt to commitment or ability to make real impact within their very narrow mission focus. Management is very good. Clear commitment to professional development for the duration of the internship, always finding time to share information and mentor. Office is simple, adequate... aka NGO. Conference call tech doesn't always work. Business casual every day. A good place to work.

    Cons

As an intern, the biggest hope is to be hired. A challenge at ACF-USA, as the office already completed a major expansion a couple years ago so there won't be an influx of hires. Also, as with most major international NGOs, the most interesting jobs are for PhD or other highly experienced candidates. Also witnessed other interns passed over for positions given less qualified candidates. Not easy to climb the ladder on the program side.

    Pros

Excellent technical knowledge and strong expertise in fighting malnutrition. Engaged and motivated coworkers eager to contribue to the NGOs mission.

    Cons

Treats employees working in the field very poorly and as disposable assets. Low pay compared to education and required skill level. Poor health care coverage including for ailments acquired while on mission in the field. Fails to live up to its ideals in not providing support for returned volunteers and employees. Seems to have a policy of not renewing the contract of employees who fall ill on mission or after return, causing them to lose health insurance coverge. Fellow humanitarians, please be careful - it can be very hard to afford thousands of dollars in medical bills following a mission with ACF when the health coverage expires. It is sad to work on nutrition and health projects abroad and then to return home only to find that your own care is not a priority for the organisation that you worked so hard for.

    Advice to Management

Value the health and well being of your field employees and live up to your values. HR needs to understand the their decisions affect workers health in very real ways.
