I worked at Active Network full-time

    Pros

Was a growing company with a lot of acquisitions.

    Cons

    - Company had no idea how to merge after acquisitions, even did not merge their email servers, benefits email were sometimes not recieved.
    - Lot of young managers with no idea of how to manage, very unorganized.
    - I worked in a very distributed team environment with different team functional responsibilty with no one owning or knowing the scope or status of the whole project.
    - There were a lot of new employees being added with a major bulk of then team being added in China on a daily basis.
    - Was expected to work late every day.
    - Felt like a very rigid way of doing tasks.

I worked at Active Network full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great work environment, great people to work alongside, and opportunity to help organizations. Opportunities to contribute to the community. Opportunity to work out at work.

    Cons

Compensation below market average, health coverage is not the best. business units can be dis-jointed. Multiple offices / focuses makes it hard to see career path. Unless you work in the San Diego office, many leadership roles will likely not be available to you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The headquarters (San Diego) is not the center of the universe. There are a ton of great employees in other offices and should not be forced to move to San Diego to make something of themselves.

Otherwise, keep improving and stay the course.

Balance your life, get Active and get promoted but don't expect to be paid industry average

I have been working at Active Network

    Pros

    Active is a wonderful company
They care about their employees and support them to be active, community minded citizens
Paid time off and flexibility of work schedule is phenomenal
Executive team is approachable and not afraid to dig wherever needed to understand how Active performs and how their decisions affect those at the end of the line
People work hard and play hard and almost every employee at the company is fun to be around.
Benefit Package (flexible medical, Cross-fit style workouts, 401K match, Employee Stock Purchase)

    Cons

Leadership needs to have a higher degree of focus, too many irons in the fire
Organization needs a clearer picture of where they want to be, not just on what they do
Poor Salaries and a history of promotion without pay increases

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus Focus Focus
Enable employees to be more efficient, too much time is spent with outdated internal tools
Don't forget the consumer, create an awesome experience for your end users

    I worked at Active Network

    Pros

Very nice people. A Relaxed vibe most of the time. Beer drinkers will feel right at home at the Active Network.

    Cons

Management and above have little experience, extremely difficult to work with. Disproportionate amount of time spent on 'SDLC' and processes discussion, yet no progress made in that area, resulting in disorganization and slipping schedules. "Sink or Swim" and "Trial by Fire" is the management style. No mentor-ship, training or career paths are offered.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Active needs to hire managers and directors with REAL software development experience and allow them to work with their teams to build them up.
