Pros
Relaxed environment
Good Co-workers
Good Benefits
Great vacation time allowed
Cons
not much room for advancement
micro managing is creeping in more and more
balance between work and life slipping more and more
Advice to Senior Management
Remember that your employees have life outside of work
Pros
The company has good benefits and the people seem really nice.
Cons
Totally disorganized, internal struggles w/ management, no resources, no support.
Advice to Senior Management
get it together!
Pros
-Ability to make positive impact in a short amount of time
-Exposure to a wide range of indoor and outdoor events/businesses from races to summer camps to camping
-Flexible work hours and ability to work from home
-Opportunity to get people involved in staying healthy in a world where the US has nearly 1/3 of its population (80Mil people) classified as obese
-Untapped business opportunities in data warehousing, analytics and cross market selling.
-Growth even in a down economy
Cons
-Business and corporate processes and tools haven't kept pace with company growth
-Employees are on average younger, less skilled and less experienced than most companies of the same size
-Some acquired companies not integrated yet
Advice to Senior Management
More focus on hiring people with the skills and experience in building well performing and reliable hardware and software systems versus expertise in a particular domain.
Focus on consolidation and economies of scale opportunities.
Pros
Laid Back Atmosphere (jeans, running clothes, anything goes)
Mandatory PTO
Workout Program
No one checks up on you, ever.
Cons
This company has absolutely no accountability, vision, or integrity.
Salaries are well below the national average
Active X - the company workout program, while it means well detracts from productivity, and brings down team morale for those who are actually working during the 2 hr mid-day workout.
Management seems to always be covering their mistakes instead of taking responsibility
No professional growth or career paths offered
Leadership is given to unqualified individuals
Employees are either ignored or told they are replaceable.
Workloads are out of control for some departments and then non-existent for others
Advice to Senior Management
I would encourage you to take a long hard look at the company and determine what is important to you. I know this company has taken everything I have to offer with a poor salary, poor career path, and seemingly all with no remorse. You speak of being about the employees and for the employees; it's time to put your money where your mouth is. I would also encourage you to look at some of your departments more closely as they are failing miserably under the poor leadership skills of their managers. It is devastating to watch some of your best and brightest walk out the door because you are not willing to compensate and congratulate them properly.
Pros
Good Company Culture
Easygoing attitude of work hard and play hard
Rewarded for doing a good job most of the time
Cons
-not too much growth and advancement opportunities here
-can become very tedious at times
-overall though not too much downsides working here
Advice to Senior Management
Management overall does a very good job I believe. Sometimes a little too concerned with Metrics and analysis. But for the most part good.
Pros
- company culture
- active lifestyle
- the people that Active attracts
- a lot of room for personal growth
- a lot of room for career growth for top performers
- continual focus on improving products
Cons
- this is a very dynamic environment - if you don't like change, this place isn't for you
- if you aren't a self-starter Active would be a tough place to work
Advice to Senior Management
Focus on the success of your people, reward them for a job well done and invest more in their growth.
Pros
Great people that understand there is more to life than just a job
Growing company - still in its "early" stages and is great to be a part of
Management encourages you to take your PTO
Work hard and you will be recognized
Taking initiative will get you places
Cons
Too many responsibilities sometimes for just one person
Active X (the workout offered) is a bit clique-ish
Advice to Senior Management
Great employees should be recognized and financially rewarded more or we are going to lose more of the "good ones" to higher paying opportunities
Pros
Active Network is a very cool company with a relaxed corporate culture. I wear jeans and sneakers to work everyday and love it. The company has been around a number of years now and has some really strong pieces in place to take business to the next level.
Cons
The company is constantly changing its strategic approach and does not seem to implement change very well. Often times, changes are poorly thought out and implemented when they are about 65% complete, causing widespread frustration and confusion. Also, for a company this mature, accounting procedures are a complete mess and have been for all the years I've worked here.
Advice to Senior Management
While the leadership is generally good, the company relies heavily on a select 2 or 3 key people who have been there for a number of years to do the work of other senior level managers. Communication and customer focused change should be a priority.
Pros
The co-workers are all very supportive, humorous, and friendly. There is also a Toastmaster within this company where you can join to establish strong communication skills. There are also great benefits including cheaper movie tickets and fitness discounts.
Cons
For me, I would wish a slightly higher salary. But the environment and managers makes me feel very satisfied about my work.
Advice to Senior Management
I have no advice. This company is ran extremely well and I am satisfied.
Pros
Very nice people. A Relaxed vibe most of the time. Beer drinkers will feel right at home at the Active Network.
Cons
Management and above have little experience, extremely difficult to work with. Disproportionate amount of time spent on 'SDLC' and processes discussion, yet no progress made in that area, resulting in disorganization and slipping schedules. "Sink or Swim" and "Trial by Fire" is the management style. No mentor-ship, training or career paths are offered.
Advice to Senior Management
Active needs to hire managers and directors with REAL software development experience and allow them to work with their teams to build them up.
