It was a roller coaster of a job!

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsYou received the chance to test games before they are release to the general public. This offers you the chance to obtain braging rights to your friends.
Break into the video game industry
    Fun environment

ConsLong hours. There are days you will be working Monday through Saturday or Sunday making sure games get submitted on time.
    Tedious and repetitive work.

Advice to Senior ManagementExtend bagel Mondays!

Driven by Internal Politics and Business

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Santa Monica, CA

ProsRespectable pay. Ability to work on industry-leading games. Attempting to manufacture a palatable work culture.

ConsInsular, political culture. Lack of clear decision-making authority. Bland, dated and depressing office space.

Advice to Senior ManagementClarify project ownership, empower staff appropriately, update office space, stomp out the political culture and reward the true performers.

Can be fun and exciting, but the company demands ridiculous hours.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Minneapolis, MN

ProsFun to make video games, can do some cool things if you're on the right licenses, most of the people are cool and good to work with.

Cons70-80 hours/week consistently, no budgets, it's not about quality but rather how quickly and cheaply you can get something done.

    Awesome environment to work in

    Rotating Intern (Former Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsActivision Publishing offers something for everyone. It has a very vibrant community and everyone is willing to help. There are beers going around the office and they host a get together one friday a month with drinks, music, and food.

ConsOrientation is poorly thought out. When going into such a big company, orientation should be a big focus so you know the company you're working for. There is also sometimes a lack of communication within departments.

Fun work enviornment, but can get tedious or boring

    Quality Assurance Tester (Former Employee)
    Eden Prairie, MN

ProsYou get to play video games ALL DAY! We take breaks often which is needed when testing video games. There is usually opportunities for overtime. Training helps you get an idea of how your time there will go.

ConsIf you are assigned to a "bad Game" the work can get very tedious and boring.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider rotating games among teams to get fresh eyes on the game and keep the testers interested.

    Great Culture, Bad Management

    Artists (Current Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsGreat culture, one of the most fun places I've ever worked.

ConsStudio was held back by the same people that created the great culture. Not the most professional, and the overall quality / effectiveness of the studio suffered. The projects we got were not terribly interesting or creative, and I think this was due to the fact that on the whole, our work was average at best.

Advice to Senior ManagementAs much as working with your close friends feels good, it is not a smart way to do business.

Pros-Learned a lot and got a lot of hands-on experience
    -Discount on games
    -Great intern outings

ConsDidn't live in the area so had to drive an hour and a half everyday. No gas reimbursement. Not really a big deal. Great experience nontheless.

    Worked at Activision too long

    Producer (Former Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsThere are GREAT people at Activision.
The end of year bonus can be nice.
There are occasional perks and sometimes they are good.

ConsVery long hours, Activision will work you like crazy. This is mainly due to the fact they are understaffed.

Upper management is very poor at making decisions. A lot of things are done last minute and the decision makes itself (usually at a cost of quality of life or the game). There is also a lot of committee decision making.
