I worked at Activision Publishing full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Respectable pay. Ability to work on industry-leading games. Attempting to manufacture a palatable work culture.

    Cons

Insular, political culture. Lack of clear decision-making authority. Bland, dated and depressing office space.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clarify project ownership, empower staff appropriately, update office space, stomp out the political culture and reward the true performers.

I have been working at Activision Publishing full-time

    Pros

Fun to make video games, can do some cool things if you're on the right licenses, most of the people are cool and good to work with.

    Cons

70-80 hours/week consistently, no budgets, it's not about quality but rather how quickly and cheaply you can get something done.

I worked at Activision Publishing as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Activision Publishing offers something for everyone. It has a very vibrant community and everyone is willing to help. There are beers going around the office and they host a get together one friday a month with drinks, music, and food.

    Cons

Orientation is poorly thought out. When going into such a big company, orientation should be a big focus so you know the company you're working for. There is also sometimes a lack of communication within departments.

    Pros

You get to play video games ALL DAY! We take breaks often which is needed when testing video games. There is usually opportunities for overtime. Training helps you get an idea of how your time there will go.

    Cons

If you are assigned to a "bad Game" the work can get very tedious and boring.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider rotating games among teams to get fresh eyes on the game and keep the testers interested.

I have been working at Activision Publishing full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great culture, one of the most fun places I've ever worked.

    Cons

Studio was held back by the same people that created the great culture. Not the most professional, and the overall quality / effectiveness of the studio suffered. The projects we got were not terribly interesting or creative, and I think this was due to the fact that on the whole, our work was average at best.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As much as working with your close friends feels good, it is not a smart way to do business.
