I have been working at Actuant

    Pros

Wonderful Wellness program, and onsite work-out facility. Actuant also has a Personal Trainer onsite, pilates, yoga and spin classes. Free if you go 4X a week!

    Cons

None that I can think of.

    Pros

Most people are very nice which is synonymous with a Wisconsin culture. This means that it takes too long to get rid of dead wood and too long to promote people who are doing well.

    Cons

Senior management espouses "no politics" whereas there is tons of politics. If you aren't located in headquarters, good luck. Nobody will notice you. There is zero investment in the independent businesses and when corporate needs to look good to shareholders, people are the first to go without regard to impact on the business. Businesses are purchased to run them into the ground. Don't expect any type of investment.

    Advice to Management

You are never going to change the culture so why not just act as the holding company that you are.

    Pros

Great people and teamwork; it's a collaborative environment; strong company values

    Cons

    we are a lean company and fairly flat - people tend to wear many hats (which is also positive - gain great experience);

    Advice to Management

continue to seek feedback and ideas from emloyees and include them in the decisions and solutions

    Pros

Your first 3 years you will be challenged and if you are good, you will be given a lot of opportunities. Eventually you will find that small group of managers at the corp level "pull all the strings" and if you are not in the "club" you will find that will not matter how good you are you will hit a wall.

    Cons

Small group of "Leaders" run the show no matter what your title is.
If you are bought by Actuant start looking for a new job or take the package.
They are currently brining "Leades" from other companies, in reality failed Managers from GE, IR and other Milwaulkee based companies instead of growing the talent in the organizations they buy.

    Advice to Management

Sell out the company to a Dover or it like as you are in over your head.

    Pros

It is very politically correct company.

    Cons

Not enough supervision from HQ to other branch offices, like: Deer Park, Red Wing an Antigo. If you don't play a political game you are out of loop and could get a termination. I have seen few hard working manager got terminated just because they were not on a political team. Leaders listen to only to their favorite employees and never make best judgment for all.

    Advice to Management

Leaders need to listen to customers and employees very carefully and make the best decision for all rather than involving in a political game.

    Pros

A lot of off-site training. Intern program is great, move between business units and learn a great deal about the inner workings of each as well as Actuant.

    Cons

While continuous improvement is a constant profits are the reason. This is at the expense of the employees who end up becoming workaholics to maintain their jobs. They are quick to decide that people must be let go especially right before quarterly reporting to the Board. The higher paid pre-Actuant employees are let go for companies purchased. I don't mean management alone, the mid-management and long time workers.

    Advice to Management

They are not open to advice unless you can show at least a 50k gain in profits.

    Pros

    wide network, breadth of exposure

    Cons

Lack of structure for development, Limited depth exposure for a project

    Advice to Management

A good structure with increasing responsibilities for program employees

    Pros

The HR function is getting more respect and a lot of that has to do with my Manager.
Still pockets of the old style of management (Actuant bought us 2 years ago).
Most functions outside of HR Operations do not know what to do

    Cons

The strategy doesn't reach all levels of the company.
The bonus program looks good but has not been paid out in full in 2 years

    Pros

Co-workers are great. HR is not.

    Cons

HR Managers are very untrustworthy. Don't believe recruiters. Ask to speak with future co-workers regarding management, especially if you plan to work with. Trust is very important in supporting user engagement. No wonder engagement is low. Don't be fooled. Talk to current employees.

    Advice to Management

Review exit interviews. There are some serious issues with HR Management, however they are the ones who do the exit interviews. Unethical behavior is supported and encouraged. Hard for upper management to see that there is an issue if the reviewers are the problem. Hire independent investigators to look at high talent turnover in the last 2 years. It is NOT because of the economy. How much talent must leave before this is addressed? They are ruining what could be a great organization but nobody is aware. Internal Audit or 3rd party investigation is recommended.

    Pros

Most of the senior leadership team of Actuant from the CEO down are approachable and easy to speak with.
The pay is OK, but does vary by business unit.
Bonus system is very good when it pays out.
    Lots of good employees.

    Cons

They look outside to fill leadership positions instead of filling them more from within
The performance review system is terrible
The bonus system drives short term thinking. This is a major problem for a company wanting to be more innovative.
New managers from larger, outside companies are having a negative impact on the culture. Corporate politics are taking over.

    Advice to Management

If you want to be an innovative company, quit hiring outside managers from large corporations and let the employees from the smaller, innovative companies you purchase lead the business.
