    Pros

    The unemployment checks once they let all employees go after their recent acquisition

    Cons

    Management is abusive (have seen a few employees cry), Management is sexist (women should not bother applying here), Management is racist (will favor opinions of some races over others), inter-company communications are a mess (massive disconnect between departments), Management across the company is hesitant to change their outdated policies, the company culture is blame first and correct second.

    Advice to Management

    Ask to be compensated for Management 101 courses and start right away.

    Pros

    There are no pros .. They got recently acquired by OpenText and I hope things change for better. You will get to see three floors of empty office.

    Cons

    This place functions like some African governmental Department. They have no product strategy in place. They have no good Product Managers or Analysts. Engineering Management is laughable . Do not get me wrong, they have like 20 years of experience but in the same company so they have no idea what is going on in outside world. All good talented engineers were so frustrated they all quit for better opportunities.
    The little revenue they generate is from legacy software licenses. I hope OpenText realize the mistake they made very soon. I would let go Engineering Management and hire someone with talent.
    In sum, this is where careers go to die. Beware of the fake four star reviews by management

    Advice to Management

    OpenText, you have been duped in paying such a huge sum for a piece of garbage. Write this off as a loss in your accounts and move on.

    Pros

    Salary was about avg for industry. Benefits avg.
    Technology was good. Really believed in solution for first few years. Met some good people.

    Cons

    Departments don't work well together. Management staff for most part is weak. Too many long term employees are moved into mgmt and director positions with little mgmt experience . This has a direct effect on the company's ability to put any structure in place or attract...retain good people

    Advice to Management

    open text acquiring Actuate will be a success if the clean house of most sales and engineering mgmt. Start fresh with experienced people who can lead would help provide direction

    Pros

    They pay for gym reimbursements and classes to increase skills for your position.

    Cons

    Management can not make up their minds and can not communicate changes to their employees effectively. If anything goes wrong, the employee takes the heat. They care more about their profits (which have been declining rapidly) than the well-being of their employees. (Employees are being forced to drive through terrible storm conditions with flood warnings and downed power lines just to go to work. No work from home options?!) Employees there are all very gossipy. Be careful what you say out loud because someone will definitely hear you, judge you, and repeat to someone else. Everyone who has been at this company has been there since they opened so there is no room for growth if that is what you are looking for. Their 401k matching pays out once a year so if you're not there when it gets paid out, then you're out of luck.

    Advice to Management

    Learn to listen to your employees. Have some compassion. A happy employee makes the work place a happier place to be and therefore increases productivity. Have you not learned from your mistakes?

    Pros

    Its an easy place to get on board because of the turnover

    Cons

    What a mess. If you need a job then take it but keep looking while you listen to the stories.

    Advice to Management

    Advice to shareholders. Take a deep look at the senior leadership and ask yourself if this is where you want your money to be invested at?

    Pros

    They have no Pros. I need five words at least for a Pro. So here it is, You will learn how not a company or a engineering team should be.

    Cons

    Ah where do I begin. No work organization or stable decision making. They are using old technologies. They call themselves Agile which means change requirements, scope whenever you like and screw engineers. They have never bothered to learn anything else about Agile.

    Managers, directors have been working at actuate for 13-20 years and have no idea what new technologies are , how are thing managed in 21st century. Suggestions are never heard, response is always "this is how it has been since the last 20 years". There is always resistance to positive change.

    Worst Product Management I have seen in my career. Tech Leads have no skills only bad attitude.

    Lately there have been layoffs and of course high attrition rate for engineers. Engineers cannot learn or gain any experience here. They have age old technology stack that is not used anywhere these days. Work experience gained here is of no use.

    Totally forgot , there are more directors and vice presidents than engineers who do the actual work. There is a director and then a senior director .There is a vice president and then a senior vice president and all for small team of 5-6 engineers. Not surprisingly they all do nothing or the same thing.

    Honestly if you layoff your directors and VP's they wont get a job elsewhere because they have no skills and they never bothered upgrading the little they learnt 20 years ago.

    Advice to Management

    I dont see a future . Sell the company as soon as you can. If you are planning to run the company, fire all engineering directors, vice presidents and product managers. Hire someone who is open to innovation and has an outlook. You have way too many directors/VP's .

    Pros

    Well paid jobs, compared to market. 9-5 hours.

    Cons

    Some incompetence at higher level. Corporate managers have no clue about tech. No growth opportunities (old boys club). They do acquisitions of smaller companies and drive those products straight into the ground. Stories went around about higher management using foul language in all hands meetings (disgusting). People lost jobs after many layoffs.

    Advice to Management

    Stop buying tech companies whose product you cannot sell. Give people a chance to advance in their careers. Cleanup your language.

    Pros

    Company has good array products and kind of stable from customer point of view .

    Cons

    No innovations
    Mediocre salaries
    Lacks focus on product development
    No information sharing at all

    Advice to Management

    Be open , bring good people with good money as well retain good talent.Allow them to bring new ideas to table.
    Please share more information with employees.
    Open BIRT tutorial series to everyone.

    Pros

    Good work environment. Benefits used to be great before buyout. Relaxed work environment. Heavy, but manageable workload.

    Cons

    Department had unusually high turn over rate (over 90%) which tells you that employees were not satisfied. Management also had high turnover rate. Management promised things like raises and bonuses and failed to deliver. Lack of communication. Failure to address real issues.

    Advice to Management

    Genuinely care for your employees and try to make them happy. Actually respond to emails, and hold meetings that address real issues.

    Pros

    Nice office in San Mateo, good people, no perks (bowling randomly), sales kick off was a good time.

    Cons

    Very little possibility to get promoted or work your way up. Even if you Inside Sales is not set up for success.

    Advice to Management

    Train the employees better and compensate them for their hard work. Also hire managers that care about their employees and have a plan to get them moving in their careers after the grind of SDR life.
