I worked at Actuate full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people. Good opportunities to learn.

    Cons

They suffer from "Not invented here" syndrome. They didn't do the necessary research in order to make decisions based on facts.

    Advice to Management

    Make decisions on facts.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Actuate full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some of the products were good, and useful to people who needed them. The Toronto office was a friendly, flexible environment. The lower levels of management were helpful and supportive. The office itself was a very nice space.

    Cons

Frequent downsizing, and other cost-cutting measures, prevent any possible growth in the business. The current hiring freeze means you cannot apply there anyway, but if you are hired, the owners are not interested in developing or expanding the Actuate product lines, so your job probably won't last long.

    Advice to Management

If you have to make financial cuts, make them at the executive and senior management levels. Choking development is short-sighted.

I worked at Actuate full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Well paid jobs, compared to market. 9-5 hours.

    Cons

Some incompetence at higher level. Corporate managers have no clue about tech. No growth opportunities (old boys club). They do acquisitions of smaller companies and drive those products straight into the ground. Stories went around about higher management using foul language in all hands meetings (disgusting). People lost jobs after many layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Stop buying tech companies whose product you cannot sell. Give people a chance to advance in their careers. Cleanup your language.
