I worked at Acumed as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

They give you the reigns on you own projects. The product management team is incredibly talented and everyone is willing to help. Questions are always welcome. They make you feel like a valuable member of the team and listen to what the intern has to say.

    Cons

40 hour weeks aren't the most fun.

I worked for Acumed from 2008 to 2013. It was ramping up...then all hell broke loose.

I worked at Acumed full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Culture and work balance were great. Travel was awesome. Decent expense policy.

    Cons

Severely undemarket for pay. Strategy was to hire straight from college and grow the employees to high level performers. They thought they could get away with not paying market rate for top talent. The new generation will constantly compare themselves to market on sites like these, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Probably should look back at what got the company to where it is and refine it....not throw it out the window and start over. Acumed got where it was by focusing on the niche. It's tempting to want to expand the product offering into a full service trauma company.....but do you really think you can compete with multi-billion dollar companies? For that to work the pritzker/tucker brigade would need to authorize the AFE for REAL, ACTUAL sufficient numbers of sets on the shelves. Distribution trumps innovation. If they can't get it, what difference does it make? Launching 20 sets here and 50 sets there is child's play. This business is scaleable. It takes an actual investment to play with the big boys, and anything less is disservice to the employees that designed it, the 1099 crew who have to push it, and the PM's that market it.

    Pros

Majority of the company is still made up of great people willing to work together to make a good product, and wanting to make a difference. Company offers great medical benefits.

    Cons

New management has made it clear that all employees are expendable and have been on a firing frenzy. Culture is in a rapid decline with many of the people who are left looking to get out.

    Pros

Great medical/dental plan options; inexpensive with low deductibles; decent PTO policy with 9 holidays including 3 floating holidays; generous training and development program and tuition reimbursement; annual bonuses that actually get paid out every year; 4-day week for manufacturing employees; easy Fridays for everyone else; new leadership seems committed to open to making positive changes.

    Cons

some negativity lingering in some departments after major leadership changes. some poor/weak leaders still flying under the radar.

I worked at Acumed full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Company culture, work-life balance, and truly interesting objectives used to be what made me think I could work happily at Acumed for the rest of my life. Unfortunately all those things have gone out the window.

    Cons

All the things that come with management wanting to dismantle the engineering side of the business:
Clueless management with zero people skills, engineering knowledge or management ability. These are people on their way down, who were hired, apparently, only to drive people out. Same with HR, who seem to exist only to thin the herd. Insulting severance packages (approximately a week for every 5 years worked, granted only if you sign all your rights away), the lack of interest in hiring engineers with any experience at all, and the fostering of fear-based management styles are a slap in the face to those of us who used to love the company and its goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I wouldn't call it management, by any definition of the word. Problems that needed addressing are being ignored, and buried under an new pile of totally avoidable insecurities and stereotypical idiotic 'big business' behavior. During the last year it was like working in a Dilbert cartoon.

I have been working at Acumed full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Their older products are still market leaders and are well received by physicians. It's a relatively convenient location (just off of 26)

    Cons

Where to begin. In 3Q2014, nearly all of the Executive Team was terminated and new leadership hired or promoted from within. And since then, it's been a fun lottery of "who's next' in terms of being let go. The health benefits are okay but the PTO is atrocious (the plant is only shut down six days a year) and new employees are only given 15 days of PTO and that includes all time that you are not at the office (have a Dr. appointment and need to leave an hour early? You must take PTO. A foot of snow outside but you can work from home? Must take PTO). Pay is mediocre at best, probably in the 40% of industry average and there is a total lack of diversity. Leadership is almost exclusively male and from the semiconductor industry and there is no option for leadership development. If you don't fit their expected mold, you're out. No coaching, just "you're out."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is a shame that you have run Acumed's reputation among local businesses/recruiters/employees into the ground. I know that I'm looking to escape as soon as possible.

I worked at Acumed full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

This company was great. Emphasis on WAS.

    Cons

This is the tale of two companies. Those at the very very top are insulated and removed from the rest of the company. The rest of the organization- fear, rumors, gossip, backstabing- anything to keep yourself from being the next target. No innovation, everyone is scared to take risks. There is no one to help, no one looking out for you- not your manager, not HR, not anyone.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be scared to look back to previous leadership to find out what was working. Though they may have been weak on somethings, they were strong on employee engagement and you could learn from them. It would be a huge step in morale if they brought a few of the old leaders and HR back in for some consulting on engagement.

    I worked at Acumed

    Pros

Nice co-workers, good transportation benefits, good healthcare benefits

    Cons

This company is falling apart in the worst way. Within the past year there have been countless firings and re-orgs and now it has gotten to the point where people are leaving without having another job to go to just to leave the company. If you google 'Cafe Pharma Acumed' you will be able to read a forum where people can anonymous posts about what is really happening in this company ruled by fear and where everyone is ready to be dismissed at 4pm each day.
