Ottawa, ON (Canada)

Former Employee – worked at Addition Elle

ProsGreat discount (50%) on AE merch. Modest discount (25%) on all other Reitmans family sister stores (Smart Set, RW & Co., Thyme, Penningtons, Reitmans). Part-timers were pleasant women to work with, overall.

ConsMinimum wage pay, unrealistic sales expectations, poor training provided. Working with only women has it's downsides (particularly with respect to part-time / full-time relations), cattiness can prevail and passive aggression runs rampant, but that's the nature of the company and the clientele it serves. There was an expectation to arrive early and stay late, without pay, to do support work for opening/closing of the store. I have no trouble working a half hour beyond my shift's end time, but I certainly won't do this for free! AE makes money off the work of it's employees, so it can certainly afford to pay them for the work they perform! Give and take, right? AE seems to be more interested in taking.

Advice to Senior ManagementThis company caters to a specific clientele, as such, specific training is required. Because I had worked mainstream apparel retail previously, the manager/company provided absolutely no training and expected me to get right to the sell, sell, sell!
Advice: spend more time providing training to new hires and ongoing training to employees rather than spending time coming up with new promos/company lines/buzzwords to tow. If a company does not provide training to employees, it has no right to fault the employees for completing a task incorrectly. Even upon request for training I was told that as far as they were concerned , I was trained. Not impressed.

ProsGreat Discount, Great customers for most of the time, usually co-workers are great except manegment. Good selection of plus size fashion.

ConsDown sides would be horrible manament, manager very rude and unprofessional. Does Not Promote for within like stated! Most managers are all recruited from one other video store so none of the assistant managers or Key holders can ever move up. Does not give raises. No positive feed back for your hard work...overall a very bad place to work.

Advice to Senior ManagementHopefully one day the company will promote there hard working long time employees. Treat your team members with respect, do not be rude or unfair.
