Overtime, baby!

Junior Architect (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill as a contractor for less than a year

Pros1.) Hourly salary with overtime amounts to huge payoff

2.) You get to work with very talented designers on fantastic international projects

3.) Work culture can be fun at times. Free dinners/ drinks

Cons1.) You will have little or no life outside of the office. Work hours range from 70 to 100+ hrs/wk

2.) Confrontationalism can get over the top.

3.) No work load planning. You may be bounced from project to project which results in long weekly work hours and a very stressful work environment

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Extremely poor time and resource management

Architect (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill

ProsYou get to work for a renowned architect, Adrian Smith.

ConsThis place has an inexplicable management organization. Extraordinarily inexperienced persons who are typically just designers who followed Adrian Smith from SOM are put in positions of personnel and resource management for which they are utterly and completely ill-equipped.

"Personal life" is not in the lexicon of this company. If you don't spend 12 hours a day in the office, you're a slacker. It's ridiculous and insulting. And of course they operate on the corporate architecture hire 200/fire 200 persons at a time model.

Advice to Senior ManagementReorganize from the ground, up.

some great work, very demanding with little pay

Architect (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill

ProsAt the time great project were happening in the office.

Conshorrible management of employees required to work 70+ hours a week with little or no appreciation. Company would hire new people and three days later lay off other because they couldn't support the work. (Why hire any more at all?)

Advice to Senior Managementrethink of the values of your firm. a good group of employees can make a project even better.
