    Pros

Benefits are good. There's a 401(K) match. If you like cars this is a great place to work.

    Cons

The leadership is completely disconnected. There is no leadership development program. Upper level management has all been recruited from outside the company. Very little diversity within management and the company itself.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to each other. Competition is good but everyone is scared of losing their job. We routinely found ourselves reinventing the wheel when it came to video and graphical assets. Stop using fear as a tactic to motivates your subordinates. That fear just trickles down and then no one wants to work.

    Pros

Plenty of development opportunities, growing company, involved CEO

    Cons

Similar to many other companies, you sometimes ask yourself, "Why is this person working here." It happens, and I avoided these people

    Pros

Stable company with stock price outlook on the rise

    Cons

Current organization chain causes conflicting goals across departments. Too many departments under the direction of one individual

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leverage ideas ways to differentiate from AutoZone and O’Reilly’s instead of consistently reacting.

    Pros

Job security. Stable company. Corporate life is great.

    Cons

You're just a number. Insulting raises each year (if any). No budget's for team outings, strength building, etc

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give REAL budgets to promote employee's, team outings, social life. Also, allocate time to improve processes. Everyone runs around with their head's chopped off and have no time to better processes

    Pros

One seems to get support from management when one is working on a favored project that enhances the budget or the bottom line.

    Cons

If one has an issue, sometimes support is not very forthcoming and sometimes slow. Depends on the manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Build your people. Enhance their skills and get to know them as a person, not just a number. Stretch their abilities. Cross train your team members where each and every person of the team can cover responsibilities and you don't have one or two people working 70-80 hours a week, When other team members want to learn and do more, but are restricted by their "job description".

    Cons

Company is cutting back on pay, and full time positions. Hard to find and keep good people.

    Pros

Good benefits, career opportunities and career growth. Nice clean, modern stores. Excellent opportunity to interact with customers.

    Cons

General Managers are more micromanaged now than in years past. General Managers now have a set schedule and must get DM approval for exceptions. Example if a General Manager wants to open on Friday instead of closing approval of the District Manager is required. That wasn't required in the past.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember "the best part is our people". Let the General Managers have the flexibility needed to run the stores.

Former Employee - IT in Roanoke, VA

    Pros

Well balanced and solid IT leadership team. The IT Leadership team really worked hard to understand their business partners while striking the balance of innovating.

    Cons

A few fire drills, and management had to "grow" to understand what needed to happen. The company has a lot of legacy and old systems, so there are some definite challenges in staying "up to date" on new technology while simultaneously supporting the old.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand the business at a deeper level. Senior management should really attempt to understand the customer as well. The leadership in MI felt disconnected from the Roanoke team.

    Pros

Enjoy the industry and company has a good culture. With so many stores and a large corporate office, there are plenty of opportunity for career growth if you want to apply yourself and actively look for something to do

    Cons

The company changes direction constantly. One of the big difference between this company and others is the number of times we change major initiatives. We seem to really have the flavor of the month and i think that slows down our execution at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work in the store more often and stick with consistent strategy and messaging

    Pros

I entered the intern program with Advance during the summer of my Junior year in college. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to be in an environment where the senior employees wish to see you succeed.

    Cons

Pay was a bit low but the experience was well worth it.
