Pros
Company perks include free meals, and the yearly company parties. They give out pretty good raffle prices at these parties too
Cons
It is like the blind leading the blind. Too much gossip on the floor, managers doing bad stuff with their subordinates, and a lot of favoritism.
Advice to Senior Management
Stick to the program middle management, don't get involved with office gossip listen to your gut intuitions and do not get caught up with in a popularity game.
Pros
They are a part of Abbott and the Abbott benefits are outstanding.
Cons
They laid off droves of people to make AMO attractive to Abbott as an acquisition. The consequence is loss of the key skill sets and barely enough people to sustain operations.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop making promises you can't possibly keep.
Pros
Good benefits, decent salary, some interesting work
Cons
Management seems focused on protecting their own butts and enforcing the status quo. They're happy to answer questions and help you out... so long as it makes them look and feel more important than you. But there's zero mentorship in or opportunities for career development.
Advice to Senior Management
Take care of your top talent - challenge them, teach them, move them up through the organization, and encourage them to care more about the product and customer than watching their back.
Pros
Subsidized Lasik. Lots of free time to learn new skills (if you are self-motivated.)
Cons
Boring. Short-sighted management. Does not value top performers. Perfect place for career politicians.
Advice to Senior Management
Sell to Abbot Lab, then leave.
Pros
delivering great healthcare solutions to customers, good products. The managers who were with the VISX side of the business are very good managers but AMO overshadowed all of the work that was done there and changed the company culture after they bought it. If you were able to get a VISX manager and some select AMO managers then the experience will be good. They pay quite well for the jobs, are fair with sales comissions and do their best to get the payouts accurate and fair if business is not going as well as planned due economic difficulties. They don't expect poor inductry business to reflect so badly on the employees where they don't have control of that aspect.
Cons
Senior management not clear in decision making, hires and repositions all the old friends for key roles and resist promoting from within the general ranks. Little proactive work to educate and elevate a person to a higher role in the current job, grooming for promotion. Little recognition for a job well done, easily forgotten if something negative occurs. No out of the box thinking for new rewards for good work, or tools that are there are not used with any frequency. Upper management relies on past history to tell the story without communicating the new vision or direction with new information, rested on old laurels as a spin off.
Advice to Senior Management
I would suggest they get rid of the old boys club and get better management in from blue chip companies. Put in place ways to truly recognise work above and beyond the call of duty to get more empowerment of people in the job they do.
Pros
Friendly people to work with. Was taken on 4 trips away during my year there, good fun. The company spends a lot of money on meeting away like Spain or Europe - got to stay in nice hotels and have nice dinners. Everyone got to get there hair down and really got to socialise together.
Cons
Quite dull office environment. Low pay for placement students. I found the office location very remote and there is no much going on out there. Very small choice of places to go during lunch etc. Also quite a small number of people working in the office.
Advice to Senior Management
Be a bit more realsitic about the products share in the market!
Pros
Interesting work
Good feeling of helping people
401(k) plan is good
Cons
Senior Management do not seem to know what they are doing. If they weren't all good friends from years back they would have all fired each other by now. Almost all Senior Management came out of Allergan and those in other branches who developed successful businesses independently are psuhed out.
There are too many changes of plan.
Management take care of the details and don't seem to worry about the big picture.
A lot of good people have left and there is a gloomy feeling that things will continue to get worse. The stock price supports that.
There is WAY too much interest in business management bs and not enough focus on product and "gettn er done"
Advice to Senior Management
Resign now.
Pros
a company with high tech products and some high skilled and motivated (but for how long?) middle management
Cons
senior management (emea) has no leadership or peoplemanagement skills and this explains why many good but demotivated employees leave for other companies.
Advice to Senior Management
good strategic aquisitions, productportfolio with few gaps, but start working on the 'happytude' of your employees.
if not too late.
turnover of employees (specifically europe) needs to ring a bell upthere, and situation needs to be adressed by for ex. hire sr mgt with peoplemgt skills.
