Pros
Fair, innovative, professional
They like to promote from within.
Cons
There is really none. I would like to be hired fulltime then I will feel like I am a true team memeber
Advice to Senior Management
N/A
Pros
They have competitive products but nothing exceptional to stand out in the marketplace
Cons
I have worked for a few major medical device/equipment/pharmaceutical companies and I can say that this company utilizes the most archaic motivational management tools in the industry which led to a high-turnover rate. People who say otherwise have never worked for a top-notch medical company and have nothing in which to compare. This environment starts at the very top and goes all the way down.
Advice to Senior Management
Learn how to motivate people with some of the 21st century theories.
Pros
it is a job, good benefits, other than that, I cannot think of any other reasons to work for AMO
Cons
Unethical behavior by superiors, rude co-workers, selfish attitude of management, does not like giving you time off; Worked in the RA/Medical Compliance department and people are rude, and do not take responsibility for their work. Dominating attitude of do not take responsibility for your own self, but blame someone else. Had a supervisor who harassed me at home, and co-workers who were friendly one minute, but rude the next. I had ideas for workflow improvement and wanted to present my ideas to the VP of my group/department. Supervisor would not allow me to submit my thoughts to the VP. Employees seem more interested in their bonuses and merit increases than ethics. You are expected to work overtime, no questions asked. You are expected not to use your sick/vacation time. Around the holidays it becomes a race for who can get to their boss first to get the best days off. Then, you get the days you want off, but your co-workers do not, and they are rude to you for it because they have to take alternate days off. You should not have to compete for time off, nor be made to feel bad because you take time off. AMO quickly became an atmosphere of backstabbing, manipulative, people only interested in themselves. Stay away from AMO. Will never work there again. Salary was $40k/year
Advice to Senior Management
listen to subordinates, give praise where it is due, stop blaming others for your own mistakes and incompetence, allow employees time off when they need it
Pros
Socially responsible and talk a high quality game
Cons
Strong silos, many people feel "its not my job," little ability to make decisions at lower levels, with Abbott purchase a lot of pressure to produce a positive bottom line short term with little long term view
Advice to Senior Management
Break down walls and encourage taking wonership at all levels.
Pros
I have a great boss.
Cons
We have inadequate resources at work.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your worker bees more.
Pros
High Tech Medical Device, cataract growing
Cons
Recent large Downsize, Refractive bad in this economy, solutions 2nd tier
Pros
Working with physicians and patients to improve visual health. AMO's products are as good a quality as any in the inductry. Their field sales force is also a top quality, customer-focused group, dedicated to excellence and patient outcomes.
Cons
The field sales force has been badly neglected! No competitive marketing team, an uncompetitive comp plan and middle/upper management that is not respected as they "lead" with fear and threats on a daily basis. Most of the sales force is unhappy and actively looking to bail out of AMO for a healthier work environment.
Advice to Senior Management
Go back to the pre-Abbott and pre-Alconian culture where people were happier, trusted, more motivated and ultimately productive!
Pros
Salary compensation was very good, but there was very limited potential for upside for a job well done. Prefer more merit based compensation for objectives being met to encourage staff to do the right things for the business to move it forward.
Cons
Upper management had another agenda; many second guessed your actions and abilities without ever giving opportunity to succeed and shine.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus on doing the right things for the people that work at the company, appropriately focus on the the product quality and the outcomes for the final consumer end user.
Pros
Company perks include free meals, and the yearly company parties. They give out pretty good raffle prices at these parties too
Cons
It is like the blind leading the blind. Too much gossip on the floor, managers doing bad stuff with their subordinates, and a lot of favoritism.
Advice to Senior Management
Stick to the program middle management, don't get involved with office gossip listen to your gut intuitions and do not get caught up with in a popularity game.
Pros
They are a part of Abbott and the Abbott benefits are outstanding.
Cons
They laid off droves of people to make AMO attractive to Abbott as an acquisition. The consequence is loss of the key skill sets and barely enough people to sustain operations.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop making promises you can't possibly keep.
