Pros
knowledge of industry and potential, network connections, rapport ,,
Cons
no room for growth if your not a favorite
Advice to Senior Management
none
Pros
Casual work environment. Balance between work and personal life.
Cons
Advanstar does not give good raises. Very very low for some of the best performers. Advanstar does not cherish their employees. Its about the numbers not the people behind the numbers. Advanstar has no room for advancement and frowns upon individuals who request more.
Advice to Senior Management
Advanstar needs to pay more attention to its employees. If Advanstar made it a point to make room for advancement and reward their employees with bonuses and salary raises productivity may improve. However, I feel Advanstar is clearly taking advantage of the current recession. You can see this with how they pay their employees and how they pay their vendors. As slow and as little as possible in order to make the bottom line more bigger.
Pros
Work Life balance is generally good. Office is bright and clean. People are generally nice to work with and are passionate about the products they work on.
Cons
Lack of communication from leadership/senior management. Lack of a mission. Always fearful your position/job is in jeopardy. Constant use of permanent temps covering for those who have left for more secure employment.
Advice to Senior Management
more communication about the mission and a better sense about job security would enable more creativity and risk taking.
Pros
The team I worked with was generally efficient and positive. The manager was very understanding when it came to sick days and time off to visit family, etc.
Cons
Despite success of certain departments, the parent company still laid off several people, keeping a large staff in less successful divisions. Overall, very inefficient management and lack of job stability.
Advice to Senior Management
Instead of looking at immediate profits and losses, look at the bigger picture and reward creativity.
Pros
it is a very Casual envonment
Cons
Dated and obsolete slow thinking no bonus and salary increases at any time
Advice to Senior Management
talk to employees about issues and salaries and not to ignore major things.
Pros
Decentralized management enables opportunity for those with initiative and drive
Cons
Well entrenched and ineffective senior management surrounding competent CEO creates leadership vacuum. Ill-conceived digital media strategy.
Advice to Senior Management
Invest in a digital content guru - the combined wisdom of the current management team got you here.
Pros
Casual work environment, 37.5-hour work week, generally surrounded be competent people
Cons
Poor leadership at the executive level; layoffs, everyone is doing more work with no raises for last two years. Loss of simple benefits like 405k match. Low salaries.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't treat employees like we're too childish to understand what's going on with the company. Communication is key at every level.
Pros
Good opportunities for travel. Some really great co-workers.
Cons
Offices are very corporate and dull. Management doesn't care much for their employees.
Advice to Senior Management
appreciate your employees and give praise where praise is due.
Pros
Small company easier to get work done
Cons
Lots of restructuring and loss of job security
Advice to Senior Management
Value your employees.
Pros
Salary was okay. There were opportunities to work with interesting people outside of the company. There was quite a lot of interesting travel.
Cons
Poor quality of products. Management often had no understanding of products, hired people who also knew nothing, everyone just bluffed their way through.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay more attention to quality and don't let the budget rule everything. Hire people who really know the subject areas and can add intellectual value to the products.
