Lots of smart hard working people! Some friendly, some with their heads in the sand.

I worked at Advantest America full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

People who are friendly, willing to share, and hard working. There are more positive people than negative ones. The pay structure, vacation plan, ESPP, and other benifits. Hard work can be rewarded. The work itself is ever changing. There is a great work/life balance.

    Cons

A set of people who think they are better then those around them, who play politics, and pass the buck whenever they think blame may come their way. They are usually evident, as others usually avoid them, or the business they are in is suffering. And, second is a set of people who refuse to change. They are stuck in the way things used to be, and don't see that the market has either moved, or that no one ever liked the way it was. Also, Advantest and Verigy have not merged together as smoothly as one would have hoped.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open your eyes. Look at places where business is struggling, and question it. There are pockets of cancer in the organization.

    Pros

They brought a strategic perspective missing from previous management

    Cons

As a Japanese firm all key decisions were made in Japan and left the US team out

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more open with the US team, meetings need to offer more US input, more discussion in English, put in US based managers in the US, instead of installing Japanese managers over US staff,

Management not sure if they are running a Japanese or American Company

I have been working at Advantest America full-time

    Pros

    Stable company with good benefits
    Opportunities for international travel
    Lots of good, dedicated people
Management seems, overall, to care about the employees
Great technical challenges in many areas
Some top managers really believe that change is necessary for success

    Cons

Too much business culture clash between US and Japan
Too many decision makers, sitting in offices all over the world, decision process is slow and ineffective. As per Japanese style, decisions are made in an off-line conversation, then forced on organization even when clear evidence of issues with the decision is presented.
Much of the "old guard" is stuck in the old way of doing things over in Japan. This ends up significantly impacting the US division.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look for ways to combine the best of the business cultures.
Start with the bottom line of what the company needs to achieve financially and work back from there to create a proactive strategy for success
