Generally good but quality and work/life balance disappears at the end of every quarter

I have been working at Aeroflex full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

High tech product line gives a lot of opportunity for learning new things.
Generally good people to work with.
Merger with Cobham potentially offers better benefits, more sales opportunities, investment in business, and a more cleanly run company.

    Cons

At the end of the quarter, nothing else matters except getting stuff out the door.
Excessively lean resources cripples getting stuff done.
Benefits: No 401k matching, $1200 spousal surcharge for spouses on medical insurance who work.
Senior management offers no support/guidance. The only time you hear from them is at the end of the quarter when they have their hands out.
Antiquated purchasing, materials control, MRP system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upgrade the MRP system to make it more productive.
Other things matter besides the end of the quarter...

    Pros

A manufacturing facility that houses everything from engineering to shipping. You really get to see the whole process.

    Cons

High stress environment at the end of the quarter and fiscal year. There is a strong sense of disorder unless you really take control of your situation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

New management sounds like it is working to improve and fix what the previous management did. Keep it up.

Good coworkers, positive atmosphere. Restricting big brother, though.

I worked at Aeroflex full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

My manager was very helpful. Coworkers all seemed to be focused on the goals, which helped us work together as a team. It felt very productive and positive. Also, coworkers were more than happy to share their wisdom.

I would happily work at Aeroflex again.

    Cons

As a developer, work was made much more difficult by blocked internet traffic. One of the libraries we used had its website blocked, so I was unable to read the docs while at work. I struggled to connect to other developers to ask questions or find prior solutions. I don't recall if Stack Overflow is blocked, but imagine if it was how that would make work more difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know it might be asking a lot, but unblocking internet traffic would make a major difference. Enable your developers to do their job effectively.

To make an analogy, it would be as if other companies had an open-book test but you weren't allowed to use your book. You could spend the mental energy and do well, but it may take longer and that energy could have been spent elsewhere.

I have been working at Aeroflex full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Management doesn't mind flexible hours though there is no formal policy regarding flex time. Work atmosphere is pretty casual.

    Cons

Recently the culture has taken a turn for the worse with electronic time cards and restrictive IT policies. There is virtually no opportunity for advancement. The quarterly numbers game gets old quickly. Every benefit offered by this company is minimal: no matching 401k, working spouse insurance tax ($100/month), no raises for the last two years, no bonuses. Management has no vision as to how to deliver a product on time on a consistent basis. They seem to rely on the talent and dedication of the staff to do what it takes to get things done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Aeroflex would be decent if benefits were on a par with other $700M-$1B companies. Look for talent within the company before beginning an outside search. "Loosen the reins."

I have been working at Aeroflex full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of nice people, reasonable work hours. Company has been acquired by Cobham, so there should be management changes coming soon.

    Cons

There are not enough people with the right skills to do the job. The Managers started here in the 1980's and closed themselves off to the outside world, so practices, systems, and attitudes are from that time period. Management it cheap, looking for bargains instead of developing for the future. Benefits are terrible. Quality systems non-existent. Anything will be sacrificed to meet year-end goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a real strategy - what business are we in? - then turn away opportunities that don't fit the strategy. Stop fire-fighting and set realistic priorities (not "meet this quarter's revenue target").

I worked at Aeroflex full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Not much to say except run.

    Cons

Everyone is looking out for themselves. There is no progress in the company, no new thoughts are welcome, always trying to cover up issues with getting rid of people or trying to patch equipment for each little thing with no vision of the big picture. No longer a market leader with any technology advanced over competitors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop only worrying about yourselves and start paying attention to the company and the product, and listen to ideas rather than always trying to impress those above you with bad action.

    Pros

People are great. Everyone is friendly and wonderful to work with. Everyone I met was highly intelligent and hard working. The benefits are incredibly competitive.

    Cons

Most politically charged environment I have ever worked for. Different divisions of the company don't seem to be too interested in working with each other to better the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try advancing the company as a whole. Not just each division. It your put all your heads together you can really make things work.

    Pros

The money is fairly good, better than at some other workplaces for those without a college degree.

    Perks? What are perks?

As for work-life balance, they should provide on-site housing, you are expected to be there so much.

    Cons

A long tenure of employment earns an employee much in the way of vacation time, or so they say, but if you want to actually use any of the accrued time, they will make it very unpleasant for you when you return to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set higher standards for supervisory personnel, and if their underlings have complaints about them, take it seriously.
