Advice to Senior Management
Look at the baseline
Pros
-Good experience
-A capstone project for all interns
-Networking events with other interns and employees
-Looks good on your resume
Cons
-Programmers are offshore
-Didn't learn too much during the internship.
-Projects were trivial, not too related to the team.
-Team doesn't really care about you as the intern (they have more important tasks than helping you) except for your manager
Advice to Senior Management
It would be a better internship experience if you give relevant projects for the interns to do and help them along the way if they need help.
Pros
They are flexible with PTO time. For Analysts, they have flexible hours which are fantastic, and they provide passes for public transportation. They have a decent benefits spread including stock options. They have current technology. They give you surprise bonuses in lieu of competitive compensation. They have high-profile clientele.
Cons
My job was the type that is production driven with 30 monthly "audits" that are mainly done to avoid giving a performance bonus. The co-workers do NOT support each other and/or work together. A lot of very aggressive and mean-spirited behavior is practiced by some managers. The workload is set up for "cherry picking" from electronic buckets of data. Most people pick and choose the easiest work from the buckets leaving the lemons for their coworkers knowing management won't call them on it. If you're not on the east coast where the main offices are, there is little opportunity for promotion.
Advice to Senior Management
Get TRAINED!! So many of the supervisors are former Customer Service Reps or friends of the Manager. They do not have the training to be good managers which in turn sends the message to the staff that "bad behavior is tolerated here."
Pros
Good compensation. Exposure to high impact work and projects. Knowledgeable and competent senior management. Industry leader. Innovative culture.
Cons
Health and retirement benefits not very generous, relatively. Though better than most peers, some of the red tape of large public company slows down some decision-making at lower levels.
Advice to Senior Management
Overall great senior management. I encourage them to spend more time interacting with rank and file employees. Also review and improve benefits package, especially 401k match and health benefits. Encourage more mentoring and advancement from within. Great job though, some of the best management talent within the Fortune 500.
Pros
Great hours (you can set them), option to work from home for a lot of employees.
Not too grueling (from my side)
Company gym
Great cafeteria
Company campus is well served by public transit (a lot of bus links from neighboring suburbs = save money on commuting)
Cons
Can be a very sleepy place to work (which can be a major upside for some people)
I've heard that it can be hard to break from middle management to senior management.
Advice to Senior Management
Doing a great job so far, make sure that Aetna can handle the changes brought on by healthcare reform profitably!
Pros
Pay is decent. Benefits slightly better than average. Other employees are willing to lend assistance.
Cons
Found it almost impossible to meet the demands that were expected for each phone call. Phone calls were nonstop for entire shift yet CSRs were expected to get work done in between calls.
Advice to Senior Management
Realize that customer service reps are people and not robots. Keep expectations reasonable as to the amount of knowledge that one individual can be expected to know. Stop adding additional requirements to an already overburdened staff.
Pros
Great for family life balance
Cons
No communication or perceived direction
Advice to Senior Management
Provide a line of site for career....compensation needs to be aligned with results as well as the businesses need to be realigned
Pros
Great opportunity to work from home
Aetna has a lot of employee wellness benefits
Cons
to management top heavy
favortism
Advice to Senior Management
Managers need to be governed better
Pros
Excellent compensation
Easy to learn and understand performance metrics
Cons
Red tape to make any changes
Conflicting communication from management, changes to program frequent and little support from management
Don't expect to be "heard" - you're just there to do your job
Advice to Senior Management
There's a lot of conversation at the top level about listening to employees and getting feedback, but that doesn't really happen at the day-to-day level (example: direct reports to supervisors.) Good intentions but the execution doesn't trickle down.
