A great place to work with great people however company is struggling to gain market share

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsPeople, benefits, flexiblity, managers, exciting work, lunch program, work from home option

ConsStock price, lack of market share growth, pay could be a little better, too many opinions from mid-upper management can slow processes,

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on inovation rather than continue to market struggling products. Make sure products come to market after comprehensive quality control.

One of the best time of my working years.

QC Lab Analyst (Former Employee) West Sacramento, CA

ProsFree food, promote from within, family atmosphere, market leadership, cutting edge technology, diversity, supportive upper management, generous tuition fee reimbursement program and prestige.

ConsManagement prone to make misstep, get out of focus and tend to be high flying leading to losing market dominance and leadership.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey should have kept the West Sacramento, Ca manufacturing facility because it is the only property that Affymetrix, Inc. owned and practically new and immaculate when it was shut down and move operation to Singapore.

Good place to work, but needs improvement!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA

    Pros-Good benefits for a mid-size company.
-Hard working and talented people, culturally diverse.
    -Fair spot bonus/ recognition program.
    -Great seminar program.
    -Provides a fair work-life balance.
    -Nice in house lunch program.

    Cons-Great technology that needs updating.
-Aggressive time lines in product development.
-Need rigorous in house product testing before introducing to customers.
    -Too many managers.

Advice to Senior Management-Unbalanced structure- too many managers for the number of people who work hands on.
-Insecurity about future is making many good people leave, management needs to be more honest about company's direction.

ConsBeside having a talented resources not able to coverage in growth of business.
Unbalanced organization infrastructure, Too many managers and upper level executives

Advice to Senior ManagementToo much focus on the Product development and lacking far behind in other functional area. Need DNA attitude (Daring, Passionate and Platinum) in other area for balancing/optimizing things.
Need fresh/new resources who can think out side the box..

Coasting on Affy core technology & consuming your competition

Product Development Engineer (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

Pros-cafeteria & breakrooms- is it a bonus to not eat a single meal at home? Maybe you work to much.
    -a few, kind veterans colleagues...

    Cons-entrench "cave-dwelling" fire-breathing dragons, oh my!
-if you never change your core technology you never have to learn, grow or accept new ideas or people(s).

Advice to Senior ManagementVP with Sr. directors must together take charge to work for change. This change is to better compete with existing & different market and make your new products successful from release. The cost-cutting strategy has been obtuse & harsh on the loyal, long-term temp "recycled" employees.

Great place to work and trying to be a great company.

Staff Systems Engineer (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsLeading edge technology and R&D projects. If you are a scientist or researcher, this is one of the places to be. Exciting and challenging projects. Great support on publishing papers in leading journals and in generating patents. Numerous internal seminars and presentations about new applications and technologies. Good compensation and benefits.

ConsIf you are a scientist or researcher, this is one of the places to be - if you are not, you sometimes get treated like a second class employee. Company structure is top heavy. There are a few groups who have 90% VPs, Directors and Managers. There are people who think or act as though Affymetrix is an 'Ivory Tower'.

Advice to Senior ManagementReduce the petty politics and kingdom building. Focus on the fact that Affymetrix is a 'for profit' corporation. Remember that scientists are great for generating new ideas but usually poor decision makers for management or business.

The best of times and the worst of times

Program Manager (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsAffy really has a fantastic technology, and some of the people developing it are the best and brightest people with whom you will ever work.

ConsThe management at Affy always felt that profitability was a side effect of doing the most cutting edge science. As a result, strategy was driven by a small customer pool of leading edge scientists, instead of understanding the complete market.

Additionally, the strength of the IP, led the company to assume a serious competitor would not emerge. Though it's MBA 101 that if you create a lucrative market, others will invade the space. It was only a matter of time before some company (Illumina) figured out a technology that could meet the same customer needs as the GeneChip.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's about the profitability!

    Great technology, poor leadership.

Manufacturing Engineer (Current Employee) West Sacramento, CA

ProsGreat technology. Do something good for the world. Many of the people are fun and driven individuals. Company has potential for turning around. Diagnostic market is exciting and could bring long term prosperity.

ConsPoor management decision making. Infighting between departments. Politicized atmosphere. Promotions more a matter of who you know, not what you bring to the table.

Advice to Senior ManagementWeed out middle managers who are hurting the company. Put more emphasis on product development, marketing, and manufacturing operations. Subcontracting/outsourcing manufacturing does not work for low volume, high complexity, and regulated environments. Stop promoting finance specialists to lead operations.
