I worked at Afscme full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

AFSCME District Council 48 is a union that represents city, county, towns, and villages employees. They fight for the greater good of these workers for better working conditions and adequate wages and benefits. Great positive work environment and coworkers.

    Cons

The main con that I can say about this company is that if the government adds a law, changes a ruling or anything, the council can take a hit.
Another con is the fact that because the council is so small there is little chance for advancement within the council. However, if you don't mind moving, there are numberous opportunity throughout the international union.

I worked at Afscme full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Helping workers gain an organized voice, a union and work contracts.

    Cons

Over 70 hour weeks (or more), weekends home and approved vacations often cancelled. Better management could cover campaign needs, without constantly making organizers work insane hours. Working nights and weekends should be from time to time, not all the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hypocrisy at it's fullest-Treat your organizing staff as you would workers whom you represent. Unions are to create and uphold safe and fair working environments. Organizers at AFSCME are treated like Indentured Servants. Hire managers who actually know how to manage campaign needs, work schedules and staff. Promote people who are qualified to promote, not just those who are management favorites, and perhaps not qualified at all for promotion.
