I have been working at Air Force Academy full-time for more than a year

    Pros

While things are fairly structured in the way of curriculum for first- and second-year students, each instructor has flexibility with that curriculum and how they approach their teaching. There's little to no politics or office drama. Interacting with the cadets is one of the highlights of this job, and the Academy's well-known high rate of instructor availability for out-of-the-classroom instruction gives ample opportunity for such.

    Cons

Not unlike any academic institution, I would imagine, the workload can be extensive to the point of taking many nights and weekends through the semester, largely in grading student work. Fortunately, in the Computer Science department, there is a concerted effort to structure classes so that is minimized as much as possible.

I worked at Air Force Academy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are no pros to this position. It is stressful, abusive, employees are under paid, overworked, and the environment causes hate among the employees.

    Cons

Mitchell hall supervisors are ignorant, abusive, and do not understand work life balance. Job is number 1! The employee is just a "body" to fill the job. No respect is given but they expect it from you. This job will ruin your health and your home life.STAY AWAY!!!

I have been working at Air Force Academy

    Pros

The Center is a unique organization focused on providing engagning opportunities for folks to develop and pursue a life of living honorably. Individuals are encouraged to work together and develop cross-sectional opportunities sharing resources and integrating programs. The focus of individuals is on the outcomes and opportunities provided to others, not on personal benefit.

    Cons

Program ownership can get in the way of integrating and updating program curriculum.

I have been working at Air Force Academy full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great colleagues--all energized to teach and research with cadets. Fantastic teaching environment focused on delivering the best possible education. Good interdisciplinary collaboration, esp in the sciences and engineering. Good integration of research into undergrad educational opportunities.

    Cons

Bureaucratic requirements that come with the Air Force: endless mandatory training and forcing support functions down to the end user (travel, etc.) as budgets are cut. Heavy teaching and additional duty workload cuts into oppportunities for faculty research.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support your faculty and stay focused on the educational mission. Protect and encourage opportunities for faculty research to ensure faculty stay current in their discipline and stay relevant for the cadets.

Former Employee - Assistant of child care center in Colorado Springs, CO

I worked at Air Force Academy

    Pros

I like to do caring for the children, playing with the children and concentrating on child development and learning. With the children, we are required to provide a stimulating and safe environment, change their nappies, feed them, keep them clean, and follow their sleep routines. I love working with little angels.

Workplace bullying,Unfair Appraisal,Employees don't last (HR has those numbers),Yelling at the Employees, friends of friends are promoted, you need to fit in that group to advance your careers, this is a joke the way managers treat you and If you have the right education or training you may be well positioned for ...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Air Force Academy

    Pros

Nationally recognized institution that caters the product (cadets/officers) to their employer (U.S. Air Force) like no one else can. The academy's grounds are beautiful, easily rivaling other majestic environments.

    Cons

Infrastructure is crumbling. Information technology is horrible and outdated (why doesn't wi-fi ever work?). Draconian security demands that are not in-line with the nature of the institution. Cadets have 24/7 access to faculty and are coddled beyond what is expected at top-tier schools. Overworked professors have no time or money for research or professional development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Halt the learning-focused education experiment. Fix multidisplinary programs that are not owned by a department. Allow ISPs for cadet dorms. Stop OD/DP duties. Fully-man faculty positions to allow professors to conduct research (vs. teaching 4 sections of core). Call a halt to deployments for senior faculty that don't help USAFA or the operational Air Force. Working us harder without recognition or professional growth opportunities makes us resent the service and senior leadership and we pass this along to the cadets every day.
