    Pros

Relaxed environment. They don't have any consumers, so there is little day to day stress, only around when contracts are due.

    Cons

Lack of any management made trying to get help a pain, as well as what to do.

  2. Good opportunity for non-military people to learn and grow while working with new technology.

I worked at Air Force Institute of Technology as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Flexible schedule. They were very willing to work around my needs, despite the fact that I was only an intern.
    - Great chance to work with prototype and on-the-fringes technology.
    - Good opportunity to work with graduate students and get a feel for graduate life.
    - Good opportunities for self-ownership of projects.
    - Intelligent and technically-informed leadership.

    Cons

    - It's on an Air Force Base, so interns are subject to military red tape.
    - Traffic. The morning commute is no fun.

    Advice to Management

I was only an intern, so hardly qualified to talk about management style, etc. I'd just say keep it up. I had a wonderful time learning and working under well-qualified and intelligent people.

    Pros

The working environment was professional but friendly and comfortable. Training was offered to help employees meet the government requirements for the positions and when needed to support new technology.

    Cons

Transitioning the largely contractor based workforce to government civil service positions was stressful and some employees had to take a pay cut to stay in their positions once the transition was completed, though in return they had the benefit of a secure government job.

    Pros

Lot's of freedom, good guidance, everyone is very friendly and helpful. Great work/life balance. One can pretty much choose their schedule as long as the hours get completed.

    Cons

Advisor not free all days. Often teaching, going to meetings, or not in office.

    Advice to Management

No paid time off for my contract. Didn't get access to facilities either although it could be due to my short contract.

    Pros

The students are predominantly military officers and their work ethic makes for a positive teaching environment. Similarly, research is focused and high quality. Instructors have near complete discretion in content and conduct of classes and research.

    Cons

As a part of the military, prospect for continued funding cuts make AFIT a continuous target for budget cutters. As an institution of higher learning within the military, certain policies, especially with respect to conference attendance, conflicts with faculty interests.

    Advice to Management

Conference attendance is essential to faculty, but conflicts with current military budget guidance. Management must rectify this by getting blanket exceptions for research funded conference attendance.

Former Employee - Software Engineer in Dayton, OH

I worked at Air Force Institute of Technology

    Pros

Engineers at AFIT have the opportunity to work on problems that have national interest and may help save lives. AFIT has a good management team that is both technically capable and cognizant of the researchers needs. There are very few micro managers here. There are also a breadth of topics to work - ranging from information assurance to artificial intelligence and aerospace.

    Cons

The pay at AFIT for a software engineer is lower than industry standard, even for the Ohio area. Dayton is not a wonderful place to live, the ability for engineers to work remotely would probably benefit the AFIT research team.

    Advice to Management

Pay for top talent when rewarding researchers

    Pros

At AFIT the primary goal is education of its students (mostly military, with a few civilians thrown in). Thus you will receive a lot of one-on-one attention if desired, and the teaching is top notch (with exceptions of course, as any school).

In addition, it has a good deal of funding, so depending on your project you will likely have a lot of choices of research topics and guidance to help you find what you are really interested in.

    Cons

Unlike more prestigious large engineering schools, If you aren't interested in one of the specific fields that AFIT focuses on, you are out of luck. Topics are mostly military-application oriented, so make sure you do some research first to see what AFIT is already doing.
