    Pros

If you can get full or part time employment in the ANG, then do it! It is a great place to work with unbeatable benefits.

    Cons

Prefer a five day work week vs. a compressed four day work week. Or, go to a five, four, nine schedule.

    Advice to Management

Continue taking care of people and getting the mission accomplished. Never lose focus on whats most important - the people.

    Pros

Amazing education and leadership opportunities, ability to serve in the Air Force without pressure to move every 18-36 months, family atmosphere as many people spend twenty-plus years working together. Generous compensation and benefits (especially when considered historically).

    Cons

"Operationalization" of Air National Guard in past decade. Leadership got a taste of power and "relevance" associated with high operations tempo and doesn't want to give it up -- plus they must constantly compete with active duty force for funding. Involuntary mobilizations to deploy overseas frequent in certain career fields. Full-time employee workload ever increasing as leadership accepts challenge to comply with all active duty standards despite one-third the manning.

    Advice to Management

For a young person interested in Air Force I recommend they go Active Duty. More benefits with less pain. ANG effectiveness historically arose from members' ability to spend years honing key skills while ignoring active-duty extraneous requirements. We cannot continue to outperform the active duty (on a dollar for dollar basis) if we become them. Our culture and values are being eroded by risk averse, business-school inspired senior leaders - the proof is the lack of competitiveness by AF & ANG officers to fill strategic leadership posts in our government. The constant threat of base closings is no way to inspire people to optimal performance and morale.

    Pros

Teamwork, pride, patriotism, tempo is good

    Cons

May have poor leadership with little oversight from the Governor. Disregard for military customs and lack of command experience of leadership can be frustrating.

    Advice to Management

Put bias in check, eliminate zip code favoritism, and promote based on merit

    Pros

Great benefits, salary and mission. Definitely fulfills the need to give back. Provides an honorable job with a sense of duty. Great follow-on potential

    Cons

Away from family, sometimes stressful, and can create a difficult choice with regard to continuing career. Guard is definitely different than the active duty component - you're left trying to maintain orders and that is a part-time job in and of itself.

  8. I have been working at Air National Guard

    Pros

Being a part of the Air National grants me the opportunity to seek full time employment, i am able to enjoy life as a civilian while ready to guard the home front in time of conflict.

    Cons

The thought of war is scary but it's for a good cause
A lot of people do not understand the work social workers do

    Advice to Management

As a service member, i am very disciplined, time conscious, and coupled with my MSW degree/ experience, i am very cultural competent and my practice is guarded by ethics.

    Pros

Pretty flexible with schedule and understanding if you have other things going on in your life

    Cons

rumors and lack of official information on future direction of wing which leads to uncertainty about job security. sometimes a good ole boys network with some of the older leadership.

    Advice to Management

Please do as best as you can in keeping members and their families updated on potential life changing situations or at least provide options for a way ahead.
