ProsYou get to work for your county and make a difference in people's lives. The benefits are awesome.

ConsAll the boomers can't quit so they sit around and complain about the good ole days before computers and performance evaluations. They don't do any work so expect to do yours and half of theirs.

Advice to Senior ManagementSend your executive management to training or make them retire. They have presenteeism and are a help to no one.

ProsAlameda County is a Great employer. The provide secure and steady work in a safe and non-threatening environment with a great retirement system. Excellent benefits.

ConsGovernment work can be difficult for some people because of the effort it takes to change the status quo. New ideas do not always move to the top easily.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe county has done a great job at maitaining services in these times of budgetary problems. Other counties have had layoffs and furloughs, and Alameda County deserves a great deal of praise for it's sound fiscal management.

Nothing's changed since the 70s

Americorps Volunteer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Alameda County

ProsAll the time you get NOT to spend at the office--generous vacation/benefits. Employees are generally nice. Little/no pressure to stay late. Some passionate public servants work hard to fight status quo.

ConsIf you want to get a sense of how employees really feel about the place, come stand outside a County building and watch the stream of workers storm out at 5:00. Most of the workforce is at or near retirement and has been here for the past 25-35 years. They gave up awhile ago, because of the red tape, politics, big personalities, entitled unions, and general apathy.

Special warning to anyone thinking of doing Americorps here--bad, bad idea. You'll get a tiny project that no one cares about, and waste your days on the web. Do yourself a favor and look for something that provides actual stimulation and opportunity for growth.
