I have been working at Alameda County full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Many departments are interested in process change and innovation to provide the best service. The County's wave to make change, while slow is moving at a faster rate than many local governments. Great sustainability and wellness programs.

    Cons

Some departments or managers are stuck in there old ways.
There is still a lot of 'red tape' to get things done.
Your experience will depend on which department/agency you work for and your manager.
Top executives, board members may have more interest in change then some managers and department heads.

Former Employee - Psychiatric Social Worker Ll in Oakland, CA

I worked at Alameda County full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You are able to continuously learn from the Psychiatrist and patients about many of the various mental illnesses learned in school. Social Work with a specialization in Psychiatry/Mental Health allows for ones own personal growth if you are open to learning about oneself.
Decent salary especially right out of school.

    Cons

Social Workers are not promoted to leadership positions or duties. Work load is too extensive and unrealistic for an 8 hr a day position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find ways to encourage, train and support Social workers to move into leadership positions. Support and assist the Social Workers who all have very heavy caseloads. Encourage leadership to work with and motivate the Social Workers. Allow time off for trainings and mandatory continuing education responsibilities without making the Social Worker responsible for coverage.
