Pros
Free flight benefits on Alaska and Horizon as well as big discount on other airlines. Airline focuses on its people before its profit.
Cons
The airline business in general is hard to work for. Customers are often in a hurry, angry, and demanding. The industry is volatile and unpredictable and highly competitive so don't expect job security.
Advice to Senior Management
Have more fun in an industry that sucks. Southwest got this one right, they have fun. You have the best employees in the business, put them to good use.
Pros
flexible work schedule; outstanding travel privileges; great health and retirement benefits; well diversed employee background; socially responsible employer; strong leadership team and hard-working employees to make company profitable
Cons
no paternity leave; more career advancement opportunities should be offered to less senior (under 5 years of service) employees
Advice to Senior Management
offer more career advancement opportunities to less senior (under 5 years of service) employees
Pros
They are active in the community and many of the employees are great people.
Cons
Flight are full and it's hard to take time off that has been accrued so travel benefits are difficult to use.
Advice to Senior Management
Alaska Airlines is lean enough. Give employees new equipment and learning opportunities to grow. Give some raises and have less controlling middle managers.
Pros
Good travel benefits, great co-workers, cross departmental movement and promotion, and flexible scheduling, that's if you are a part of management.
Cons
Favoritism in the upper management ranks, a lack of diversity in management, and low pay compared to the same careers in other companies.
Advice to Senior Management
Please look at diversifying management, the next time you have a departmental meeting or team meeting look around and see if diversity is part of the "Alaska spirit".
Pros
Innovative company, challenging work, great brand, wonderful customer service culture, higher than normal vacation allotments, flight benefits
Cons
Salaries low for web jobs compared to other companies in the Seattle area..
Advice to Senior Management
Costs are critical but avoid cutting too deep.
Pros
Flight benefits are great and getting better. Good Medical/Dental. Fair pay with longevity.
Cons
Some middle management tries to manage through fear and intimidation. Decisions are made without enough consultation with the people who do and know the job. They want to bust the union
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to workers. Learn the job you are managing before making decisions about changes.
Pros
Culture, benefits, people, brand, network, agility to respond to competitors, smart management team.
Cons
IT, IT, IT. HR, HR, HR. Salaries among management are lower than industry average, but performance based pay makes up for it.
Advice to Senior Management
No when to stop cutting.
Pros
Great benefits and co-workers. Used to have a great company culture.
Cons
The culture has changed now that the company keeps going through re-org after re-org. The company is becoming less productive because people are fearing for their jobs. Lots of negativity and a lack of trust in mgmt
Advice to Senior Management
Don't just think short term. We posted one of the best profits in the industry, don't make everything seem so "peachy" if you keep letting more and more people go. Tell the truth so people can plan ahead.
Pros
Run of the mill job - Happiness, stress, friends, schmucks, good managers and ego managers. Many different jobs performed from ticket agent to ops to flight attendant.
Cons
Pros are as typical as the cons. Same stuff as everywhere else in america no matter how bliss-full one may say their work environment is. The slackers have penetrated this work environment too and yes if your not a slacker you'll have to pull their weight or call them out on it, even if they're on the upper deck.
Your perfect work environment is not going to be found, you must create it. Decide what you enjoy doing that you can leave your mark and make a living. It is what you make it and it helps to know "The Secret" but "What the Bleep do we know"
Advice to Senior Management
A humble manager with high yet reasonable expectations will have his employees support and a great chance at 110%. Ego strokers are just gossip topic while minimum job requirements are met.
Pros
Interacting with passengers, the fantastic co workers and the opportunity to work at any of the stations. I also appreciated the non rev travel opportunities. Although there are not that many destinations - they are fantastic for travel on your days off.
I thought the training and customer service skills aquired were beneficial. The information I learned in this training was beneficial for future jobs.
Cons
The variable schedules were difficult to adjust to- I really felt that it was almost pure luck with what kind of shift you'd receive. (Luckily, they permit shift switching and picking up extra shifts). I didn't really have any bad experiences with this company though.
Advice to Senior Management
To distinguish yourself from other airlines, I belive that you need to empower your employees to make a difference when a passenger is having a bad day (when flights are cancelled etc). Alot of the time, it felt like hands were tied.
