Pros
The company has little competent competition in Anchorage and has proven profitable for the owner over the years.
Cons
No ideas or suggestions for improvements in workplace are allowed. Boss was even afraid to move
a chart he did not use from his office wall because his boss put it there. There were a number of physical constraints on job efficiency but no interest in correcting these problems. Company required purchase of office equipment and materials by the worker. Alaska Steel goes "cheap" when buying supplies and equipment.
Managers did not like each other and ran each other downverbally. Immediate manager did not respect his boss and ridiculed his computer skills. My manager did not teach me what I needed to know to do the job and then bullied me with ridicule like, "You went to school so long ago, you didn't grow up with computers". I was bullied about my age and my job performance without any hint of the sort of let's work together and get this job done attitude that is vital in the construction industry. Profanity and "venting" were management tools heard from time to time. The company rents everything and everything in the place is old, dirty and many times repaired.
Advice to Senior Management
Company "insurance" is denied for 1 year to new hires for any pre-existing conditions which resulted in no coverage for me for conditions which affected my comfort and performance on the job.
No regular job performance review process is in place. Any evaluation is all subjective. Owner and CEO asked in writing for employees to come in an discuss their future with the company, my boss forbid me from taking up this opportunity. I left seeing no personal future with the company though I had personally detailed 44% of the Rebar Division's projects the year before.
