I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Lots of positions available because nobody stays

    Cons

Having less than 10 years seniority and getting to choose your vacation is expected but working understaffed, compromising patient care and not getting any vacation at all was not.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop compromising patient safety and staff units safely.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The staff providing front line care ( doctors, nurses, health care aides, support staff and most lower level management) are there for the right reasons. Many of these people are putting in hours of unpaid time just to ensure patients are receiving safe care

    Cons

Upper management has little to no concern for staff and patients. Nursing jobs are being cut and AHS is planning to lay off several RNs over the next 2 years. Patients are being sent home before they are ready. Staff concerns are dismissed and staff is routinely bullied.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest about what your agenda is. Don't claim that patient care is a priority when you are slashing the numbers of RNs and other health care workers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

too much bureacracy and no accountability, constantly talking about change but little to no movement forward-meetings for the sake of meeting and not results oriented. poor performance is rewarded. hard workers given more work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need a 360 degree employee assessment that includes assessing your own manager.

I worked at Alberta Health Services full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

People truly work here because the drive of the business is to care for patients; all Albertans.

    Cons

The many levels of bureaucracy here make it a very long process to implement any innovative/effective new programs or processes, even if they will save time or money in the end. This stifles creativity and makes employees feel powerless. AHS is essentially a puppet of the government and if the minister doesn't approve, it doesn't happen. The minister also conceives of things he thinks should happen and they must happen immediately, resulting in a daily scramble to kowtow to his wishes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give managers, directors and VPs more leeway to approve new and innovative processes and programs to be able to truly improve the system and health care for all Albertans.

I worked at Alberta Health Services full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good salary and benefits, large enough to have growth opportunities

    Cons

Managers do not know how to manage staff effectively (at least when it came to some who were automatically carried through amalgamation).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide training opportunities to those in management.

Former Employee - Project Manager in Edmonton, AB (Canada)

I worked at Alberta Health Services full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The pay is decently competitive, very excellent benefits for non-union staff, and generally very friendly and kind co-workers.

    Cons

HR is a joke. Some people don't get paid for months at a time, the hiring process is awful, and absolutely no attention is given to new hire orientation or set-up. Entire management organization is plagued with people who cannot make a functional decision and who aren't professionally trained in how to run a large corporation. Management IT systems and decision processes are about 20 years out of date. There is a management culture that has no interest in improving things, and many high level staff are severely under skilled in basic computer and organizational skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time to do a major clean-sweep of upper management. There are some good people, but way too many people who are too inexperienced in inept to do the jobs they have. Stop promoting nurses from within to management, and hire some actual, experienced business professionals to run the business side of the organization.

    Cons

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
