Good benefit packages for Out of Scope positions
Good wages for In Scope positions
    Relaxed workplace
Great, helpful people in all areas of the organization
    Meaningful corporate mission

    Cons

Leadership that micro-manages and has no vision
Constant political interference that stalls or cancels projects
Expensive and limited parking arrangements at most sites
Limited training and career development opportunities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Display more transparency and communication across the organization (e.g. too many silos)

    Pros

The salary and benefits are good in comparison with other establishments. It is a good place to work for strategic staff if you are a manager and above.

    Cons

Too many staff are overpaid at the senior level. Micro-managers galore. No reward and retention scheme. Organization is too big for its boots and as a result it has lost its direction and stability. There are too many meetings held where nothing comes out of them. The gap between the lower level staff and higher is too vast so leaders are completely out of touch. Also there is quite a lot of bullying and also discrimination. Resources are not utilized appropriately.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop talking and actually make what you discuss happen.
Utilize funding more appropriately and don't run the organization as if it were a private company.

    Pros

Amazing people come to work at AHS, the pay is fantastic. They're generally very flexible.

    Cons

The only problem is nothing ever gets done. Projects and ideas get stalled because of politics both internal and external.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find out what is keeping the great ideas that are floating around from becoming reality. Why do people that love the industry hate the company?

Former Employee - Practicum Student in Edmonton, AB (Canada)

I worked at Alberta Health Services as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I had an excellent experience as a practicum student with AHS. The Director gave me excellent work assignments, and training opportunities to help me build my knowledge and skill sets regarding disability management, health and safety principles and practices. Also, the Director was very supportive with introducing me to managers in the insurance industry, which have turned out to be valuable contacts. Networking and developing relationships with others is crucial to acquiring career opportunities in today's competitive job market.

    Cons

Currently AHS is going through major changes as an organization, and therefore as a practicum student I didn't see any opportunities in the area of my interest. I am confident that when a suitable opportunity arises that I will be contacted by my practicum supervisor who is in a senior role.
