I worked at Alberta Motor Association

    Pros

Great people to work with. You won't find any better out there....this is honestly the reason most people stay.

    Cons

Management live in their own little word. What they talk about doing and what they actually do are two entirely different things. On the surface the company looks really good, but once you work there awhile, you start to see the cracks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop playing favorites. Listen to the people who actually know how everything runs and what needs to be done and then do that! Don't walk around patting yourselves on the back and saying how great you are.

I worked at Alberta Motor Association full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I helped stranded people every day. Nothing felt better than others knowing that you cared and could help solve their issues.

    Cons

How can you be productive when they reprimand you for following policy? The management is so deluded and dysfunctional that they would fire someone who is trying to do the right thing. They believe that by slowly destroying the towing industry that they will look better than the other companies. They never make a profit and give away all there services because they don't want upset members. They have zero understanding of value of service and compensate for ignorance by terminating anyone who tries to make a difference. You can not trust anyone from supervisors to managers because they will lie right to your face and then blame you when you point out their incompetence and untruthfulness.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house, and learn simple business practices like don't spend more than you make. The membership is falling and the advertising is not the problem. The problem lies in the power tripping ignorant management who are robbing you blind and causing all the failures within the organization.

I have been working at Alberta Motor Association full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Look good on the outside. Everybody knows the company.
Co-workers are nice people in general

    Cons

Management - micro managing and double standards. If employee gets the job done, it shouldn't matter how I do it. I spend more time contemplating how to deal with supervisors instead of doing actual work

Leadership - they don't really take your advices for which you were hired for. Kinda old-schooled.

Work is boring, repetitive, way too much manual work which could totally be automated. By the way, pay is terrible.

I worked at Alberta Motor Association full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The best things about working for AMA are that you can help people and make them feel like they are part of our family - you really can make a difference.

    Cons

The not so good part of working at AMA would be the bendable rules and questionable ethics of bodies over the senior management level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If Mr MacDonald were to walk in and see how things were being conducted internally, he would not be pleased as he came from a time where his word and his handshake were his contract. Leadership should be like that.

    Pros

The culture and ability to go above and beyond for members.

    Cons

Business units do not easily work well together (eg travel vs. insurance)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Company that actually cares for their employees.

    Cons

Every situation is treated on a case by case basis which could promote inequity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure you are talking to the people that carry out the tasks involved in taking the direction you steer the company in.

    Pros

It's easy to meet lots of good people. Still have allot of friends left over from working at AMA

    Cons

Management is pretty terrible, at least in my store. I experienced a significant amount of harassment, to the point of upsetting other staff members. in addition, the pay is terrible. Could make the same money flipping burgers.

I have been working at Alberta Motor Association full-time

    Pros

    - Management doesn't really understand technology so they don't ask a lot of questions about your solutions

    Cons

    - Management doesn't really understand technology when they decide a solution or product they will not listen to the people they have hired to do that job
    - dress code for non public facing staff: doesn't make a lot of sense. The kind of pants I wear does not affect my productivity
    - outdate facility. Needs to be updated or non public facing teams should be moved to better facilities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the people you've hired to do a certain job/role.
