I worked at Alcatel-Lucent as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay for students, onsite fitness center, nice location, lots of other students around, and onsite Tim Hortons are some of the attractive points of working here. Notice that they are not really related to the actual environment you are working in, though. Many of the employees are attached to the company in the same way that many were attached to Nortel before its collapse.

    Cons

Being an old company, the culture is aged and buried in bureaucracy. There are some half-hearted attempts at reform by upper management, but at the end of the day the management does not seem capable of bringing the company to the 21st century. The technology (software, specifically) used at this company is archaic, along with their development practices (although this may vary by department). Offices are your classic 90's cubicle farms that make collaboration more difficult then it should be. Many of the best employees are leaving for greener pastures.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take inspiration from modern technology companies if you want to attract today's youth. Although on the exterior the company appears to be a modern and forward thinking organization, the attractiveness and excitement quickly disappears once one enters the company.

I have been working at Alcatel-Lucent

    Pros

Good people, I have the best managers in the world, both of them are smart, knowledgable, protecting the team members, etc.

    Cons

Bad people, slackers are in every corner and every level... this is also why there are people who say this company is really relaxing and all that... I take on big projects and work 10 hours everyday plus weekends, but still get paid the same as people who have 5 coffee breaks + 2 lunch breaks + gym times... The worst part is that no one cares, they can't get fired unless they screw up something really really bad... After spending 8 years trying and trying, I started realizing this is the company people settle for their retirements, not for people who still care about their careers... Do I still need to say anything about money?? There is no money in this company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The reason 'people who care' are leaving is because the company doesn't care about them

    I have been working at Alcatel-Lucent full-time

    Pros

Lots of opportunity for learning and working with experienced developers.
It's relatively easy to move within the company to a project you prefer.
Very flexible work schedule. In North America, you start with a very good amount of vacation, which is a good starting incentive.

    Cons

Lacks that young developer culture/spirit; the work style and environment leaves little room for creativity and innovation. Extremely slow growth in compensation.
