    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of different opportunities within the company, as with any big company.

    Cons

They have been laying off for 13 years now, and there's no sign of a turnaround. The people were good at one time -- in their hay day, but layoffs have culled much of the talent. Layoffs were supposed to cull the dead wood, but the talented people began leaving on their own when they saw the writing on the wall.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to those below you. You hire them to provide information to you. Don't then make decisions which are contrary to what your underlings are suggesting.

Stop outsourcing. You have forgotten the motto "you get what you pay for".

    Pros

Exceptional colleagues. Many smart, loyal and dedicated co-workers. Amazing talent here. Work conditions are good - flex hours and schedules are helpful. Salary and benefits are competitive with industry.

    Cons

An aging technical workforce that is not being replenished adequately with new talent. Business decisions may have caused a delay in moving from telephony technologies into more current internet technologies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't hesitate to innovate. Be leaders in the industry, not followers.

I worked at Alcatel-Lucent as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The best part of working here was being able to interact with extremely smart people, a lot of former Bell Labs employees with a lot of technical knowledge. ALU is very diverse and gives you the opportunity to work with people of different cultures all over the world.

    Cons

As an intern the biggest con for me was the fact that it felt like 95% (if not higher) of the employees were 45 years old or older. So for graduating students and younger people there's not a lot of co-workers that you can really relate with.

I have been working at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

work on fairly new technologies, R&D still going

    Cons

layoffs everywhere, work piles up from those that left, and that work is all ... highest priority

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

(to executive mgmnt) - get lost, there is more and more management levels sucking up the money that can be used for R&D

Lots of deadwood in lower level managers and department heads, some engineers too.

I have been working at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Work with some very smart and dedicated engineers who just love their work, and are willing to share their knowledge.

    Cons

There are managers and department heads in some areas who are way past their prime. All they are interested in is getting their paycheck and be left alone. They don't want to know or do anything about incompetence. All that an engineer has to say is, "I don't know" and the work will fall on someone else. You raise an issue and you own it. 80% of the work is done by 20% of the engineers, yet the bonus and pay raises are all even. My manager said, "that is the world is that way, 80/20". So, looking to move to another area where the "Technical Manager" is really technical, more like a project leader.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shuffle the managers and department heads. Upper management should come and meet with the lead engineers and find out what is working and what isn't. Have surprise visits and join group meetings to weed out poor management. After meeting with the lead engineers, go meet their immediate managers. If you find the managers are out of sync with the lead engineers, it is time for those managers to go. If not, those lead engineers will be gone soon and what you have left are worthless managers.

I have been working at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very flexible work hours, good engineers to work with, good products overall, telecommuting available in many cases

    Cons

too many hours and too much out-of-hours work, not many opportunities for growth, no raises and minor bonuses in the last several years

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to keep up with the market, take care of your people as they are your biggest asset. Most employees feel the company does not treat them well and is more concerned with taking more away than providing for a good work environment.
