    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    I worked for ALU for 5 years after graduation and it was really wonderful time there. I had many great memories with all my colleagues in the countries i worked. Due to global projects I have worked in many different countries in the globe.

    Cons

    Too many organizational changes and it got worse over time. I had very brilliant hardworking colleagues but they had to leave because of poor management or low salaries sadly. But yet still a great place to work.

  6. Good Network & Systems Integration Vendor - but haven't evolved to the 21st Century

    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    I worked for Alcatel, and then Alcatel-Lucent a couple of times, first in the late 90's, and then 2006-2010, and whilst I mostly enjoyed the people, the culture, the work and work-life balance it always seemed to fall a little short and not be challenging or dynamic enough. Some great training, some very inspirational leaders and managers, and overall mostly very capable people to work with, to manage, and to follow.

    Cons

    Having worked at several Network Vendors, ALU felt like it was still in the 20th Century, with all the various baggage of multiple vertical businesses which never really meshed or integrated effectively. Some archiac practices, systems and processes felt held back by the weight of poor overall company results (even if you/your silo was doing fantastic).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Grow, evolve, regain a dynamic, can-do, sales and customer oriented culture with great products and services.

    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Friendly and open. Leaders work hard to lead and encourage teamwork. Matrix management means your skills can be made available widely to keep you as busy as you need to be.

    Cons

    Telecomms always moves slowly. Acquisitions and merger has meant friction, mistrust and internal politics. Some staff tuck themselves out of the way and add no value. HR team in Newport can be a bit backward - telling me it was an IT problem when my account was removed during my last day and that my unclaimed expenses, therefore, wouldn't be paid. HR team in Newport does have some great people in it, too. French team work to their own timetable and can be frustrating to deal with. I left because I needed more money and to be busier.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up and good work, refining and encouraging.
    Improve communications in and around teams.

    I have been working at Alcatel-Lucent as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

    Friendly staff
    Incredible innovation
    Global teams
    Huge financial portfolio
    Graduate salary competitive
    Good pension + health scheme
    Great work life balance
    Very flexible
    Very keen to hire internally
    Company car (not for students/graduates)
    Ability to home work

    Cons

    Tools and systems need upgrading
    Managers have inherited managerial positions
    Huge redundancies due to shift plan
    Career Progression halted due to removal of UK presence
    No pay rises or bonuses in recent years
    Lacks something special
    Still a mix of Alcatel systems and Lucent systems
    Aging staff population, very few new faces
    Share price is very low
    Office in UK running at low occupancy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Benefit in the long term gain by investing in the short term.
    Ridding excess staff can only be achieved effectively if the infrastructure left behind is strong enough to cope.
    The company has the resources and skilled staff to thrive, I really hope that I get to witness it.

    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Excellent company in terms innovation and technology;
    Very good benefits - pension, private medical insurance for employee and family; cost cover to eyes test, and upto £60 spectacle etc;
    Colleagues support each other.

    Cons

    Too many managers with poor management skills;
    Too many project managers don't know what they are doing and eat all the profits margins;
    Talking too much but no good action plan etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get rid of 50% managers and 80% technical project managers and project managers then the projects would be more successful with good profit margins.
    Take decision quickly to reduce moral impacts to employees.
