good balance of work life and personal life; telecommuting a good plus

Work from home and all the tools are provided. Training for the position is very extensive. Some of the people you meet are very nice, others not so (very self involved).

Work from home - can be very lonely for a person that thrives on having co-workers around to quickly interface with and ask questions.
They thrive in an old world work practice - be in your seat by start time, can not leave until your shift is over, ...
They really need to re-think how they treat their employees or once an employee see's that another company offers more advanced work ethic they will leave.
The software they currently sell is sooooo behind the curve, using very old IBM hardware to try and drive the new enterprise world, when there are other applications out there that blow the pant off of what they sell.
Advice to Senior Management
Improve on your employee relationships, take interest in what keeps them going thru the day and fine tune approach to interfacing with employees. Don't make them an island.
Pros
Evryone is treated as an associate not a subordinate. Good balance of work and personal life. Staffers know how to have fun on the job without it distracting from performance. Financial backers appear to be positioning firm for growth through acquisition.
Cons
Benefits for the employee are average, but the costs of adding family members is very high almost like being on COBRA. Salaries are 10 years behind the times.

Make the healthcare benefits more affordable, they are onerous at this point.

It is small enough so you know everyone, and you can usually meet and talk with anyone. They don't watch you closely, and are flexible for hours. They don't expect you to work overtime a lot.
Cons
Not much vacation (2 weeks < 3 years, 3 weeks < 15 years), no health coverage except basic medical (no dental, no vision). No opportunity for advancement. Main product is ancient, running on IBM iSeries (AS400). Windows client was designed to emulate the AS400 client, then patched with features that don't fit in well. Main software is C++, some of which was converted from old PL/1 code, much of it was written by people learning C++ and Windows.
Behind the times regarding software tools. No use at all of modern tools such as .net, C#, or even linux tools.
Recently bought by an Investment company, but that doesn't seem to be working out well.
Advice to Senior Management
Get the core features working right before adding more and more complicated features. Use standard controls for Windows app. Let employees know where they stand before simply dismissing them - an employee who has worked for years with favorable reviews doesn't suddenly become unable to do the job without some reason.
