I have been working at Aleris International

    Pros

The salary range for my current position is well above average for this area. After conducting job searches, I have found I make roughly $15,000 more annually than the average pay for the same position at other companies in the area.

    Cons

I have had no time for personal or family life working for this company. I have worked sixty to eighty hours a work since I have been employed with this company.

I worked at Aleris International (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They will treat you very good in the beginning and they will pretend to foster growth and development. But the reality is they know they have horribly high turnover rates so they are basically lying to you in the beginning to try to keep employees longer.

    Cons

Very very bad work life balance. They expect management to work 60 plus hours a week. They say they will promote you for your hard work so work hard now and pays off but that's a lie! The average turnover rate is measured in a couple of years 2-3.

I worked at Aleris International full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Can honestly say that Middle Management tries very hard to make it a better situation for everyone working there. But between the Union and Upper Management it is a constant battle.

    Cons

Union Employees have more control than they should have. Not a good mix of give and take between Union and Salary. Upper Management is totally clueless as to what it takes to be successful but plant manages to survive despite their incompetence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many people working there that are related/family members. I have never worked at such an in-bred company in my life. Most major companies would not allow this type of nepotism to go on. Very little opportunity for advancement at this plant in Lewisport KY.

Company was going through Chapter 11 shortly after I started as an Engineer out of college. Training was not ideal.

I have been working at Aleris International full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Company is relatively stable except for the recession period in 2009 when the economy dropped off a cliff. Work-life balance is adequate at least for salaried employees.

    Cons

Communication from upper management is lacking at times but it is a challenge when you are spread across several continents and locations across mainland USA. Also frequent management restructuring results in lack of continuity.
