    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A company choking on its own growth!

    I worked at Aleris International

    Pros

Good entry-level pay good pay throughout the company. Could be a good place to start and get experience but there are a lot better place to start also with more training.

    Cons

Works you death! And dose not give you enough kudos when you go way above beyond. They instead ask you how soon you can do the next pile of projects they have lined up for you! Lack of upward advancement even though they say they have a program to identify excellent performers, the reality is its hard to get promoted because most all sites operate so lean that manages can't be promoted because there would be no one to take their positions. Do to their poor score on sites like this they have a issue finding new employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too Aleris corporate management please read this :

Top crop. Management needs to stop lecturing managers at the plant site. Corp. Management will tell you how your site is doing something wrong and they have absolutely no idea what what you are doing at the site or what is going on. Stop treating managers like children! When a site has a safety issue all of Beachwood (corporate office) goes completely nuts and basically goes on a witch hunt! VPs and the CEO think that all the programs and systems they have in place are somehow going to save each plant and be the greatest thing ever for each site, problem is most of those programs and systems are broken or completely un-achievable for plant sites! Lastly this is the only company you will work from where corporate treats each site like it is a small child and they will scold you if you do something you do not like. They have a system that you enter near-misses or accidents at the plant but if you enter something into the system they blow what ever happened completely out of proportion. They need to support the plant not yell at them, most sites under report issues because of how top level management reacts to something small like a mobile equipment near-miss. CEO has a monthly call where he go on about issue he dosnt understand and he interrupts other management to change something they said or to lecture a site for something, even if in reality they have done nothing wrong but merely he has failed to understand the information presented!

I worked at Aleris International full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Can honestly say that Middle Management tries very hard to make it a better situation for everyone working there. But between the Union and Upper Management it is a constant battle.

    Cons

Union Employees have more control than they should have. Not a good mix of give and take between Union and Salary. Upper Management is totally clueless as to what it takes to be successful but plant manages to survive despite their incompetence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many people working there that are related/family members. I have never worked at such an in-bred company in my life. Most major companies would not allow this type of nepotism to go on. Very little opportunity for advancement at this plant in Lewisport KY.

I have been working at Aleris International full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Company is relatively stable except for the recession period in 2009 when the economy dropped off a cliff. Work-life balance is adequate at least for salaried employees.

    Cons

Communication from upper management is lacking at times but it is a challenge when you are spread across several continents and locations across mainland USA. Also frequent management restructuring results in lack of continuity.

    Pros

They pay well then dispose of employees at will

    Cons

CEO has no clue about the people and his management staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open your eyes and realize your people give everything and you do not appreciate them. Today was horrible how HR treated people horrible walking them out. Yesterday were trusted employees but because you can not make numbers they are suddenly criminals. Well enjoy your breakfast tomorrow at the town hall I will not be there

The strategy of the company is to make the finance looks better every quarter!

I have been working at Aleris International full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

salary is good. middle management who knows the business much better than top management is trying to keep everything running.

    Cons

Top Management is clueless about the business and only financial results is the topest priotity. Strategy plan looks very ambitious, however, it is just soemthing you can dream on paper. In order to present a good result every quarter, an easy and quick thing they can do is to fire people and the rest who can stay have to share the work of fired people.
Not everyone is doing the right thing for the company, but for ease of themself, especially those who get more bonus at the end of the year.
Cost where you can really reduce for the good of the company is not reduced, while costs where you should save is not saved.
HR does not need to do many things, however, the personel of HR is increasing, even after limited budget. In order to make impression that HR is working well, they ask every employee to fill in trainning wishes every year, while they don't offer any options for you to choose. Every year everyone just doing the copy paste job for trainning wishes, because he knows that is not gonna happen with any trainning. At the end HR just answered that because everyone want something else, it is not possible to organise. There is no strategy of HR to retain good/talented people in the company. They just think that you are from this area and you will not leave the company as long as you want to stay in the region. HR also offers a company package for your private part of retirement. However, once you leave, only the part (about 5%) you paid is valid, which means you can skip it.
