    Pros

How would you like to work in a place that creates medical products that make a huge -- perhaps life saving -- difference in peoples lives? That's what they do at the Alfred Mann Foundation. The culture is professional and collegial and you get to work with highly educated and competent people.

Medical research requires an extensive, standardized documentation process and technical writers are valued for their contribution in helping everyone achieve that.

    Cons

I have no cons to offer about this group. I got to know a majority of the people there and I observed that the only complainers were people who were not particularly good at their work. The complainers weren't bad people -- they were good people who were in the process of removing themselves from a good and important group.

I will say, though, that research is a trial-and-error process. There is sometimes the feeling that a lot of effort just went into something for no result. You just need to know that the feeling of life-saving and life-changing success will make it all worthwhile.

    Advice to Management

I have a great respect for the company management.

    Pros

The organization does interesting work and most of the employees are very friendly.

    Cons

Too many politics getting in the way of advancing one's career, as well as, making a meaningful contribution to the organization overall.

    Advice to Management

Take a look from the perspective of lower-level employees; you might learn some interesting things.

    Pros

Work experience with an ISO 9001 certified medical device developer. The satisfaction of working on providing injured people with new solutions to their problems; specifically, wireless electrical stimulation of nerves for accident & stroke patients for rehab.

    Cons

They are currently focused on a single device which all research and development revolves around (an implantable neural microstimulator), so you've got to love the product or go elsewhere for a change. In addition, I've seen very talented people who were let go when business got a little slow in their department, when I feel they should have been moved laterally. I think AMF was trying to be budget-conscious, but I noticed that these changes lowered morale a bit, and were not the only option for saving company resources.

    Advice to Management

Just to move their talent around instead of laying them off too hastily.
