    Pros

Culture, work environment, benefits. Dynamic marketplace with good business prospects and opportunity to travel. Always looking for good people and smart group of people to work with and for.

    Cons

upward mobility, not a lot of roles if you don't want to move. Nothing really bad to say, good place to work.

    Pros

There is a true team spirit working at Algorithmics, you feel like you are part of the family. You are working with exceptionally smart people who are always willing to help you grow in your career.

    Cons

The company was lacking structure for some areas. There can be unreasonable timelines set for deliverables due to the lack of understanding in product complexity.

Once a trailblazer, now left in the dust.

    Pros

Interesting subject matter and a great location in Toronto.

    Cons

The company used to hire the best of the best. These days a heart beat suffices, especially for those pursuing managerial positions. My manager had no degree or risk/it technology experience.

Lifers and the ever desperate folks who return on their hands and knees inhibit creativity, growth, and productivity in a space which once prided itself on thriving on all the above.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recruit the talent who can implement the latest methodologies and technologies and get rid of those still clinging on to the 90's.

Used to be one of the best software shops in Toronto. IBM takeover has destroyed everything.

    Pros

Although the company already lost many great people, there is still some solid talent left. Few are lucky to work on interesting projects.

    Cons

Absurd IBM bureaucracy, clueless managers. New "processes" imposed by IBM are running the company into the ground. Morale at its lowest. Rampant cynicism. People leaving in drones to go work directly for clients. Algorithmics is done in, much like other IBM acquisitions. A very sad end for once a fantastic company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show some spine, stand up to the Man. Resist.

    I worked at Algorithmics

    Pros

Great people in the software and financial engineering side.
    Good documentation
    Good work life balance
    Casual attire
    Some traveling

    Cons

People with no financial or software development knowledge have recently been assigned senior management positions. They are making very poor decisions and alienating the employees. This new management has created a poisonous environment and many good people have left Algo in the recent couple of years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

listen to your employees and reward the people who do the real work.

    Ok mostly for junior staff

    • Career Opportunities
Current Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Toronto, ON (Canada)
Current Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Algorithmics

    Pros

    * Flexible hours.
    * Opportunity to learn a lot for junior staff.
    * In general, people are very polite.
    * In general, people will share some knowledge.

    Cons

    * Lack of planning and management.
    * Salary is acceptable to low, compared to similar companies in the same industry.
    * No work life balance,
    * No opportunity to advance, unless you've spent a long time with the company.
    * Very few Software Engineers are actually good.
    * No code reviews, virtually no communication, isolation.
    * Most employees don't really understand how their work impact the business, they just write code.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * Instead of being focused on quick deliveries, the management must dedicate reasonable time to provide working and high quality software products.
    * Poor planning and decision making will drive you to an end. Lots of good resources left already, but yet it doesn't look like a warning sign.

I have been working at Algorithmics

    Pros

    - Very nice office in a convinient downtown location
    - No dumb people here
    - Benefit package is pretty good
    - Flex hours
    - No dress code

    Cons

Despite of its 'hip' image the company fails to deliver in a number of categories:
    - limited opportunities for professional and career growth
    - training and development is very piecemeal
    - no commitment to community, no involvement in 'green' initatives
    - the company and its employees seem too focused on making profits

Algorithmics: we even make banking and IT hip!

    • Career Opportunities
Current Employee - Software Engineer in Toronto, ON (Canada)
Current Employee - Software Engineer in Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Algorithmics

    Pros

Toronto headquarters are in a fashionable downtown district, the interior design is open plan loft with Persian carpets and soft lighting - this is relevant since this reflects management's given careful thought to productivity and a nice work atmosphere!

The people Algo employs are generally young, sociable, hard working and polite people, few back stabbing corporate climbers. Staff "churn" is very low, people like it here and stay for years since we're all given the chance to progress our careers (even internationally).

Algorithmics compensation package is extremely good and management do their best to be transparent regarding quarterly targets so staff can see how well the company is performing.

    Cons

Frequent national and international travel for most Professional Services staff.
Mid-level management is rather bloated which can hamper timely decision making.
Poor communication between headquarters and satellite offices on all levels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good word, a steady hand is needed in these torrid markets.
