    Overall it's a good firm. Join if you're a senior professional, stay away if you're a junior person and want to grow.

    ProsCompensation and benefits are probably the best in the consulting world. It is hard to imagine something better. Base salary is a tad lower than other consulting firms, but the comp structure is variable, so when you put in those long hours on a project, you're rewarded immediately. This is not discretionary, there is a formula for that.
    Benefits are fully covered by the firm.
    Work hours are flexible and they are respectful of needed/booked time off.

    ConsCareer advancement is way slower than in other firms. You could be a partner at other firm and still be a VP/manager leve al AlixPartners.
    Bonuses and promotions are huge black boxes: communication on how they are calculated is non existant.

    Advice to Senior ManagementKeep hiring good people, but pay more attention to the professionals you already have in house. Many people are leaving because they don't feel appreciated enough.

    No work life balance, make sure you are buddies with the partner.

    ProsOvertime pay, consistent year-end bonus, almost free healthcare coverage for you and your family, intelligent and hardworking coworkers, pension program (the amount depends on your base salary) and a generous amount of vacation time.

    ConsWork/Life balance is non-existent, partner rewards those who are friends with him gives those unworthy people promotions, must be connected to email 24/7 and even when you take vacation you never feel like you are truly "away" from the office because you still get emails and are expected to respond.

    Great consultancy for experienced hires; known for restructuring/bankruptcy

    ProsThe firm pays a significant amount of attention to using common sense. Since this is a smaller and relatively younger firm, the infrastructure has not all been set up yet, so people often operate with their own judgment vs. set firm guidelines. Since all employees are required to take an IQ exam and personality quiz as part of the interview process (based on the Wonderlic test amongst others), all employees are vetted by past experience and actual performance. This results in a group of extremely high performing consultants who have similar mindsets of getting the job done no matter what it takes. Everyone is also quite humble, down to earth, and family oriented (especially since the majority of the employees tend to have at least 5-8 years of experience when they are hired, but there are also some hires of people with 2-3 years of experience).

    The pay is probably better than most consultancy firms on average, simply because you get paid overtime and a year-end bonus, which amounts to a good portion of your salary. They also offer great healthcare benefits for you and your dependents.

    ConsBecause of the older nature of the employees who also may have families to raise, there tends to be less focus on bonding and socializing out of the office and more of a culture of getting home asap after work. There is also somewhat generation gap between Directors and Associates who work very closely on the same team. In contrast to Big Four firms where the MDs and Senior Managers hardly interact with the Associates, AlixPartners has small teams where all members of the team from young to experienced work hand in hand. This generation gap also shifts the culture dynamics within a team as certain traits of a younger group may not be compatible with the ways of an older age group. Also, there may be more stereotyping of what a younger generation is or is not capable of. When being managed by people closer in age, they are able to judge abilities more accurately since the supervisor was would have been in the same shoes not too long ago.

    For people who join in the middle of the year, there is not much guidance or hand holding through the onboarding process. There is a 2-3 day orientation that gets you set up, but career growth, professional development, and finding engagements is all up to you after that. The buddy/mentor system is very fragile and not always set up properly. Therefore, employees need to take much more initiative to reach out to others and find out how the firm operates.

    The work tends to revolve around restructuring/bankruptcy most of the time, since that's what the reputation of the firm is in. Sometimes there are other types of projects, but these are the ones that get most of the attention and larger staffed teams. All practices of the firm (FAS, EMS, IMS, and TRS) could be involved in a single client. Sometimes the work is interesting, but at the lower levels, it could be just tedious and mundane. Since it also takes a while to be promoted in this firm, people who are quite senior could also be doing tedious or mundane tasks -- for example, it's not uncommon for Directors to be creating and editing Powerpoints or drafting up financial models. The firm also relies heavily on paper documentation and binders, which seems a bit old-fashioned. However, in working with law firms and bankruptcy courts, I guess this may be a necessary evil.

    Advice to Senior ManagementPlease be more transparent to employees when there are changes in management. There should also be more feedback about the calculation of salary and bonuses. Additionally, scheduling could be improved if there were a central management system that shows available consultants vs. those booked on engagements. There should also be more information about what of engagements are running so that employees are better able to manage their workflow and direction of their careers. Training should also be more emphasized since your people are your greatest assets. Although revenues would be greater in the short-term, sacrificing training will only hurt the firm in the long run.

    ProsSmaller companies offer great learning opportunities so I really expanded my skills and experience.

    ConsAdministrative "back office" staff is always second fiddle to client facing staff, which is likely true at most consulting firms, so it's tough to build a business case for change.

    A great place to work on important problems, but demands a high degree of self-reliance from its employees

    Pros1) Work on very interesting, challenging and important client issues and cases
    2) Work with some of the premier organizations in the world - financial institutions, investors. law firms, and other professionals
    3) Colleagues within AlixPartners are highly capable individuals, and generally good team players as well as strong individual contributors
    4) Entrepreneurial environment encourages staff consultants to grow their own business
    5) Lack of rigidity - boundaries are fluid and individuals have latitude to define roles and pursue their interests within the overall construct of the Firm's practices
    5) Lack of bureaucracy

    Cons1) Firm lacks some of the supporting infrastructure of larger competitors, which places somewhat more burden on the individual in developing business
    2) Low leverage model sometimes results in senior consultants doing work that would be more appropriate to junior consultants in a high leverage model
    3) High hurdle to becoming a partner means that many senior directors within the company are likely to remain so
