I have been working at Allegheny Technologies part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

A huge opportunity for anyone starting out, students will be hard-pressed to find a better learning experience for their field.

    Cons

Incredibly high stress for students because the work loads are full time work loads on part time hours. Currently in the IT department, we have a staff of anywhere from 2 - 7 part time college students managing over 7 plant sites country wide, including their plant's user base as well as Wah Chang's own users.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Students deserve competitive pay raises and vacation time from a multi-billion dollar company, even if they are temps.

I have been working at Allegheny Technologies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work schedule was flexible for students, but only in some departments. Work with good people.

    Cons

Bad pay scale, no benefits, on-call duties can be difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time on actually training your employees, instead of having them watch safety videos, especially consider training or learning programs to the student workers. I believe this would drastically improve the company and make up for some of the cons of working there as a student which makes up a large portion of the work force. Also consider hiring more full time employees.

    Pros

Good 401K. You can potentially work with some really smart people if you're lucky. It's a great crash course learning environment for young engineers. Company is great to work for if you're a metallurgist or on the business side of things.

    Cons

People strongly opposed to innovation/changes. Expect to be called in the middle of the night or get called in on weekends. Action item oriented - the thought is by keeping busy you're accomplishing something. A lot of blame and no one taking responsibility for anything. People losing jobs or quitting and no one filling their position. Lot's of expressed dissatisfaction nothing done to address it. No team efforts. Very few projects or changes to lead without experiencing extreme opposition. No recognition for achievements. Procedures on procedures on procedures. A lot of older guys about to retire a lot of younger guys on the verge of quitting. No progression. There seems to be a long course of nepotism. People promoted who don't do anything. Lack of interaction from management. A clear distinction in work environment between management/business (mahogany desks private parking) and engineers who sit in dirty windowless rooms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try going to the floor and talking to some of the people who produce the bread and butter of the company.

I worked at Allegheny Technologies full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are ok. There are some nice people that work here.

    Cons

Was asked multiple times by direct managers to do things that were unethical. There is no work-life balance. The company is still run like it was in 1970. Don't try and suggest improvements or changes to process or systems: it won't happen and you'll be reprimanded. Overall: If you choose to work here, be aware that this is a very old company that values the status-quo.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

From what I hear, some of the management problems I encountered have been solved. That's good, but keep going. Also: You'll get much more output from your employees if you give them some time off every now and then.

I have been working at Allegheny Technologies full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pay and company 401k contribution. Great place to gain incredible experience as a young engineer. Good commitment to safety.

    Cons

Poor medical benefits. I have declined them, thankfully my spouse's employer provides adequate benefits. If you have surgery, expect to pay $5k+ out of pocket.
Absolute work overload. As the number of employees have declined drastically in recent years, the same workload has only increased. No time to concentrate on what is truly important to our job functions. Little focus on long term improvement in areas other than safety and cost reductions. This all contributes to frequent turnover of young supervisors and engineers.
Many senior managers are well past retirement age, are disgruntled from when the company got rid of all medical benefits for salary retirees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The recent integration of business units will pay dividends in the future, as it was actually long overdue. Even out benefits between the union and salary employees, they are not nearly comparable.

I worked at Allegheny Technologies full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good salary, retirement plan, insurance and nice work-life balance.

    Cons

Leadership varies from good to poor based on plant/segment/division. Promotions/growth seemed to be based more on who you know than what you know.

I worked at Allegheny Technologies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Salary, benefits, and vacation were good. Overall people were good to get along with and nothing run in the business unit I worked it.

    Cons

Small business unit is larger business leads to chaos in what business unit is to accomplish. Never sure if you are going to remain part of a business unit or not.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a vision of what you want each division to become and let the division know this goal and give them the resources to achieve it.

I have been working at Allegheny Technologies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very safety oriented! The pay is also very good for the area if you don't have a college degree or experience in a specialty field (i.e. medical, control room operator, welder). If you are very forward thinking and safety minded there is opportunity for advancement. Great for any young guy without a family life!

    Cons

A lot of paperwork to keep track of and a lot of double standards. The work can be extremely tiring on top of the rotating schedule (Dupont schedule) and graveyard shifts. All shifts are 12 hours as a laborer.

I have been working at Allegheny Technologies full-time

    Pros

The company is well structured without any debt, and has a diverse product offering. For certain types of employment, there are a lot of opportunities.

    Cons

The metal industry is very competitive, which can cause a lot of dynamics, including a lot of restructuring. Some may consider this a good thing, however. The corporation is not as well integrated between companies/business units as one would hope or expect, with little ability to move between companies or even understand opportunities at other companies. Even the sales teams work against each other in some aspect due to misalignment and less-than-ideal integration (not poor, but needs improvement).

I have been working at Allegheny Technologies full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

At my plant, the management team is accessible and the working conditions are good without the "high stress" that sometimes comes with my position at other companies.

    Cons

The machinery is outdated and it's usually cold inside the plant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.
