    Pros

In order for a company to grow the management must lead by example in caring and love.

    Cons

It is wrong for a company to control your vacation time to their advanage

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Alliant Techsystems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Compensation is average,
Lean Initiatives used to run the business
Great people to work with overall.

    Cons

Merger with Orbital led to several layoffs
Promotions slow and raises low to average.
Management is running the facility too Lean.
Not enough Technicians & Inspectors, necessitating a lot of overtime, leading to tired, burnt out staff.
Training overall is below average which means lots of mistakes, rework, repair and scrap.
Equipment is dated overall and not enough to do the jobs efficiently.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Walk the Talk
Cut the catered all hands meetings in the parking lot and put the money towards sufficient staff, training, state of the art tools and equipment to do their jobs

I have been working at Alliant Techsystems full-time

    Pros

For technical careers, there can be some good challenges which keep a person motivated. Benefits were good particularly the health care. Typically, the 'tools' used for a job function were very good.

    Cons

Promotions are practically non-existent. Chaos with constant re-organizations of management and business groups make it difficult to establish a relationship with a supervisor. Some severe micro-managing inhibits individual development as well as the company excelling beyond its current technical capacity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop micro-managing. Delegate and allow individuals to be accountable. Recognize and reward expertise.

I have been working at Alliant Techsystems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay is good, benefits are decent, they start you with over three weeks vacation in the first year. We used to get bonuses based on realistic goals.

    Cons

They change your schedule multiple times a year. Management is now a holy terror. Mandatory overtime is now just part of your regular schedule so you can forget about family time. They continue to try and outsource our jobs. Management has set goals so high that they are unattainable given the equipment that we have and the lack of support groups (maintenance, electricians, engineering, skilled trades) Our best skilled trades have left to go elsewhere for better work environment and opportunity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat the employees right. Settle on a contract with the IAM so Lake City can get back to churning out world class ammo made in the heartland instead of outsourcing our jobs and trying to micromanage us into oblivion.

    Pros

Enjoyed the work for the most part. Worked on the cutting edge of some processes and technologies.

    Cons

Frustrated when working with the government (defense) and ATK project managers working on government projects. They are slow to respond to requests for changes.
Ignore issues and problems associated with products and manufacturing processes.

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    I worked at Alliant Techsystems

    Pros

    - Great People
    - Interesting Work
    - Good Pay
    - Obtained real world experience as a process engineer by diagnosing a machine issue that caused a rejected part to be accepted

    Cons

    - Not a lot of work laid out for me
    - Didn't get to use a lot of engineering knowledge
    - The project assigned to me was never fully assigned and explained
    - Out dated work areas (Old desks)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize the capabilities and strengths of your employees. Allow more work to occur between Product Development and Manufacturing so that they don't "butt heads" as much as they do now.
