Pros
Great work team, varied and interesting patient population, good support from management, variety of locations/work sites available, benefits are generally on par with other hospitals/clinics, Management generally seems to be competent, and morale in my department and work area is good. People are treated fairly, and there are regular and visible employee recogniton efforts.
Cons
The same disadvantages involved with any corporate medical setting, basically....senior leadership is sometimes more preoccupied with image than substantive improvements in patient care...and you work with the same vast disparities that you'd see anywhere in the American health care system, particularly at the Abbott-Northwestern campus.

Pros
I work on a great team and we all get along really well. Our director is intelligent and fair and keeps us informed of new things going on at Allina. I think the communication in our department is excellent. I feel Allina offers good benefits and promotes a life/work balance.
Cons
It depends what location or department you work in.
Advice to Senior Management
I think the Be Fit program is awesome. I like that Allina offers a wellness credit if you complete four steps outlined in the brochure. I think it is important that Allina is promoting wellness and educating employees about living a healthy lifestyle.
Pros
Wonderful benefits package; really great coworkers; more support for innovative ideas and listening to complaints we had, as staff. Most of all, the management really implemented safety measures to keep patients and staff safe on the job, reducing injuries across the board. Uninsured individuals given no different treatment. Overall, good place to work.
Cons
There are obviously problems with select staff members, but it seemed like management was willing to listen to this, most of the time. One big problem in BHS is that the group therapy staff kept getting fewer hours, or they didn't hire new staff, and this was a problem for the nursing staff, because we had to put out many more fires that likely wouldn't have been issues if patients had been less bored and more engaged in therapeutic activities.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop cutting funding to the therapy staff. The psychiatrists and nursing staff cannot function effectively without them! If you are going to stop scheduling the group therapy staff, then you need to add nursing staff to the adult units that are specifically designated to do groups -- as is done on Station 37.
Pros
well-respected hospital in the community. Abbott Northwestern is a great heart hospital and most doctors are great. Unfortunately, they have to spend too much of their time pleasing management. The bosses are the ones who control everything and of course, make the money.
Cons
Too corporate with big salaries going to the CEOs, not the medical professionals and periphery. money is way too important here when negotiating and communicating with employees. they even give out "report cards" as to how "we" are doing. as if the average employee cares or can influence most financial outcomes for the hospital. they are kidding themselves if they think we think this stuff is important to us personally.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop the Friday e-mail and nature of your communication style. It seems phony and is.
Pros
The employees make it worth coming in day to day.
Cons
The pay and benefits are awful. We have the highest health care employee costs. The best annual review rating will only earn you 3 percent raise. With the cost of living what it is I don't know how much longer I will be able to continue to work at Allina. Sr. Management really needs to be overhauled. Every year the engagement reports faults Sr. Management and nothing ever gets done about it.
Advice to Senior Management
Praise people for the correct things not for just doing their job. Also pay them what they are worth and pay them adequately so they can afford to feed their families. Give them good benefits. Currently if you're hurt outside the twin cities area, you have to crawl back to the nearest Allina facility in order to prevent paying even more than the standard ridiculously high co-pays and deductibles. Not a decision you want to have to make when someone in your family is hurt. Recently Sr. Management had blamed employees for high health care costs saying that most employees could have used self care instead. Real nice, especially when you consider with Sr. Management's bonuses allow them to have expensive luxury cars. Why don't they take the bus like they preach to the rest of us to save gas?
Pros
Allina is a well respected employer in the area.
Cons
Allina is one of the biggest employers in healthcare.
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure you are promoting people on overall skills and abilities not just "likeability" or character. I've seen many a Director level employees who did not have a good balance of skills and abilities to understand healthcare as a whole. I was not satisfied with Sr Mgmt but happy in my department.
Pros
The Health Industry is always growing and jobs are usually in demand, tho at times there are financial cutbacks, and there have been layoffs.
Cons
In many areas there is a shortage of employees due to cutbacks causing those that are there to work more hours than they should, causing stressful situations. Mgrs seem to think more about their bonuses than the employees in their departments.
Advice to Senior Management
Think more about advancing current employees when they apply for jobs they are qualified for instead of hiring from the outside. This does nothing for moral of those that apply over and over for positions they qualify for.
