I have been working at Allstate

    Pros

Excellent hours for parents, typical 9 to 5 with no weekend work. I love the office setting and customer interaction.

    Cons

The pay could be better for the amount of work that needs to be done daily. Data entry can become redundant with so many record keeping applicaTions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the suggestions from the employees who have the most contact with customers. We know what they want.

I have been working at Allstate full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Vacation days are incredible- 5 weeks PTO minimum; Vested pension; Matching 401k; peaceful easy feeling at work; employees are incredibly friendly and nice. Family comes first so therefore plenty of telecommuting allowed or flexible work schedule.

    Cons

Pay is not competitive at all; Bonuses and merit increases aren't very good either; plenty of horizontal opportunities to apply for and encouraged but limited vertical growth and opportunity. People tend to have a lot of meetings where they constantly babble. Words speak louder than action. Everything is theoretical, nothing practical.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rebuild your leadership program and allow fresh blood to engage and become a part of the next generation. Increase compensation so that talent, especially from the city, will be attracted to make the trek up to Northbrook.

I have been working at Allstate full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great work/life balance, competitive pay, solid benefits. The company is big enough that there are many opportunities, and they seem to care about their employees. They also encourage lateral department moves which can help get you out of a "funnel"

    Cons

Slow work pace, many people around for too many years slow advancement of company and efficiency. There are many people at Allstate who are making decisions on technology, etc that have no proficiency with technology. While this is only one area, it effects the efficiency of the entire company. There is also no accountability for people to grow with the business as far as technical acumen, so many people who have been there too long can get by without improving.

I have been working at Allstate full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Has a solid business representation in all activities.

    Cons

IT has a very complex organization and different IT teams contradict each other.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at simplifying the IT structure so there are either less groups or so that the goals between groups are in-sync.

I worked at Allstate full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Excellent hours, challenging work, valuable litigation experience. Small firm atmosphere with the backing of a large corporation. Competitive salaries, based on experience.

    Cons

Quality, litigation oriented support staff members were rare due to lack of proper training and corporate mandates. The result, attorneys were required to pick up the slack and provide specific instructions to avoid potential professional liability issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Properly train the support staff. These men and women are eager to do a good job, but with the litigation caseload assigned to attorneys, there may not be time to train each assigned legal secretary and paralegal.

    I worked at Allstate

    Pros

    Large company, small offices, interactive

    Cons

Management rules prevent growth, don't honor and reward agents like they used to

I have been working at Allstate

    Pros

While the company overall is a good organization. The tuition reimbursement is fair, family day, that type of thing. The office has been newly remodeled, so that's nice as well.

    Cons

The good hands are highly political. The compensation structure is less than average. Maybe on the way in they will pay market rate, but once you are on board is it difficult to move up. Don't expect a development plan. The way to the top is more based on you likability by the right people versus your performance on the job. Get on the inside with senior leader you are golden. If you are not accepted by the "in crowd" , you could spend a decade in the same role with a meager 1 - 2% annual raise.

While they tout a work life balance, dependent upon your area, it is likely to be more work than life in my experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the annual review process to concentrate on business outcomes rather than the employees ability to do administrative work. While I know that's a bit harder to track than "metrics", but in the end I think it would be better for the business and for the employee. Something to think about.

I worked at Allstate full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The training and the co workers

    Cons

The managers and supervisors are inept and on a power trip especially a woman manager over a male employee. I was there over 10 years and told by a female manager who had no experience doing my job that maybe this wasn't right for me ----that makes a lot of sense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not be on a power trip and belittle employees treat employees better and with more respect,
