    I worked at Allstate

    Pros

Good work life balance and 20 PTO days in your first year. Hard to beat the amount of vacation days

    Cons

Very political. Best people not rewarded for their efforts. Not a big incentive to work hard since people who don't work hard will get rewarded all the same

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow people to progress quicker who are ready. Don't bring whole groups of people up the ladder together

I have been working at Allstate

    Pros

Benefits, comparable pay, work experience, networking.

    Cons

Excessive hours due to heavier than usual work loads, unreasonable goals, claims are not easy to settle as Allstate doesn't like to pay O&P on their claims. Very high rate of employee turnover. Management overrides decisions for insufficient reasons, undermining claims adjusters abilities and decisions based off of policy languages. Poor quality of training, and insufficient training before putting employees into the field.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees, and do not over work them. Try to keep your good employees. Stop treating employees like second rate citizens. Offer overtime or comp days/time for employees working more than 40-50 hours/week.

    Pros

If you are looking for a place to work that has a great environment, then this is a good place for you. The people here can be friendly and helpful. They preach a work/life balance, but I didn't feel like they truly believed it. There are tons of pot lucks and little social events to help stimulate a positive environment and atmosphere.

    Cons

If you live in southern California, there are not too many offices. There are a lot of seasoned veterans working here and as they slowly leave more positions will open up, but you kind of have to wait for it. The training was not very good, at least for me. There was some web based training and some sit-along training sessions. In claims there are too many scenarios to really cover during training, but in regards to habits they tend to take the metrics and show you what you are not doing well, but don't have much time to really sit with you and show you how to improve. Management is spread thin jumping from one meeting to another. Their tactic is to look at the numbers and attack the issue once the problem has been identified, rather than attacking the source which is the training. There is a lot of time spent on doing these extra activities and things to motivate associates, when in reality positive support from management would help a lot more and cost less.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think that at one point Allstate was ahead of the game and is now playing catch up with the competition. I think that they have an older client base and are now realizing that they need to catch up to the younger, more tech savvy client base. I think during this transition process their employees are suffering. One message is stated by upper management, and another message is being delivered by lower management, leaving the adjusters confused.
Technology wise and process wise, there is still a lot of work to do. I think that management should take more input from the frontline if they really want to know what is going on with the company. Town hall meetings with employees and management not present would probably provide employees to be heard, that is of course if management really wants to listen.
Also, movement and growth within the company should be promoted and not looked down on when trying to move out of a certain department. There was a feeling that some of the managers did not want to lose good people, or people in general to other departments, mainly because it takes a lot of time and effort to train new people. This goes back to the managers being spread too thin and not having enough time to train new associates. However, having cross trained associates helps bring a different perspective or insight into the new department they go to.
